Huskers Begin Fall Drills

Lincoln -- The Nebraska volleyball team opened fall camp Monday morning with the first of two practices at the Nebraska Coliseum.

The Huskers broke into two groups this morning, as Monday also began the last week of classes during the summer session. The first group worked out for two hours beginning at 7 a.m. while the second group when through a two-hour workout at 9 a.m.  NU will work though the schedule until final exams on Thursday.

The Huskers return five starters from last year’s NCAA semifinalist squad, including All-Americans Sydney Anderson and Tara Mueller, and welcomed in a recruiting class that is rated as one of the best in the country. With a deep roster, 10th year Head Coach John Cook is looking forward to watching some of the battles for playing time take shape in fall drills.

“I think we have some good competition at every position,” Cook said. “At some point, we would like to settle down on a group that can together on the court, so we can build the team chemistry, but there is some competition and it will bring out the best in everyone.”

One Husker who is motivated to return to action is middle blocker Kori Cooper, who returns following knee surgery last November. Cooper, a first-team All-Big 12 performer said it is good to be back on the court and rehab showed her why she enjoyed volleyball so much.

“Sitting out allowed me to take a step back and to see why I loved the game and why you play the game and what you missed about it,” Cooper said. “It gives me a refreshed mentality heading into the year.”
