Austin - Hannah Higgins' game-winning rebound goal with 6:52 remaining broke a 1-1 tie as the Texas Longhorns came away with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Nebraska soccer team on Friday evening at Mike A. Meyers Stadium in Austin, Texas.
The Huskers fall to 8-3-4 (2-2-2) on the season, while the Longhorns move to 7-6-2 (3-1-2).
After falling behind 1-0, senior Julie Berkshire tied the game in the 26th minute resulting from offensive pressure on three consecutive NU corner kicks. Sophomore Blair Slapper made sure Nebraska cashed in on their final opportunity when she sent the corner kick to the far side of the goalie box, where senior Carly Peetz got her foot on the ball before Berkshire calmly knocked in her first goal of the season from five yards away.
Nebraska began finding opportunities at the 20-minute mark, when Slapper's corner kick nearly snuck into the top of the net, but was deflected over the crossbar by Texas goalkeeper Alexa Gaul. Two minutes later, freshman Morgan Marlborough had the same fortune on a shot from the top-left corner of the penalty box that Gaul again redirected out of play.
Texas took its initial lead in the 16th minute when the Longhorns advanced the ball past midfield and centered a pass to Kylie Doniak. The sophomore midfielder then fired a shot from 30 yards out that found the upper right corner of the goal for a 1-0 UT lead.
The game-winner in the 83rd minute came after Doniak's pass got through the NU backline and Higgins fired a shot at Husker goalkeeper Jessica Mills that was saved in front of the goal. Mills was unable to corral the ball, however, and Higgins swept up the rebound for the winning goal.
The Huskers return home for an important matchup against No. 14 Texas A&M this Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Nebraska Soccer Field. NU has a 7-0-2 record at home this season.
