Huskers Sign Three Talented Gymnasts

Nebraska men's gymnastics coach Chuck Chmelka announced on Thursday the signing of a talented three-gymnast recruiting class to join up with the Huskers during the 2010-11 season.

Florida flipper Wyatt Aycock will add to the 2011 roster, along with Texas natives C.J. Shaaf and Eric Schryver.

"I am very happy with our three signees," Chmelka said of the recruiting class. "All three finished in the top-15 nationally. They will contribute immediately to our team score and are all oustanding individuals as well. This is a very strong class."

Headlining the class is Wyatt Aycock, an Orlando, Fla., native, who will join up with NU after finishing his prep career with Orlando Metro's Level 10 men's team. Aycock most recently competed at the 2009 Visa Championships in August.His score of 81.30 in the all-around placed him fifth among the nation's best level 10 gymnasts. Aycock's other top-10 finishes included his second-place finish on floor exercise (14.15), second-place finish on pommel horse (13.80), ninth-place finish on still rings (13.10), eigth-place finish on parallel bars (13.40) and seventh-place finish on high bar (12.80).

Eric Schryver, from Richardson, Texas, will come to Nebraska after competing for the World Olympic Gymnastics Academy Level 10 men's team. Schryver has competed in numerous competitions, including the VISA Championships, Junior Olympic Nationals, Pacific Coast Classics and the Texas State Championships. He placed 11th at the 2009 VISA Championships with a score of 78.90 in the all-around. Schryver also placed sixth on floor exercise (13.95), seventh on pommel horse (13.30) and third on high bar (13.00).

C.J. Schaaf, a Houston, Texas, native, will round out Nebraska's talented signing class. Schaaf has had an impressive prep career with Cypress Academy. Schaaf placed 13th at the 2009 Visa Championships with a score of 78.45. His best showing came on high bar, as he tied Schryver for third place with a score of 13.00. Schaaf also placed seventh on parallel bars with a score of 13.45.

With eight Husker gymnasts on track to exhaust their eligibility after the 2010 Nebraska season, all three signees will make an immediate impact to the 2011 season. Head Coach Chmelka and assistant coaches Jim Hartung and Phil Cahoy Sr. are looking to restore the Nebraska gymnastics program back into a national power.
