The ninth-ranked Nebraska men's gymnastics team will travel to Norman, Okla., for a dual against No. 3 Oklahoma on Saturday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m. in the McCasland Field House. Live stats will be available at Oklahoma's website (soonersports.com).
The Huskers are 4-1 on the road this season, with losses to Oklahoma and Minnesota and wins over Air Force, Arizona State and Washington. NU and OU match up for the second time this season, as Oklahoma defeated the Huskers, 347.400-337.050, at the Rocky Mountain Open on Jan. 16, 2010.
Nebraska and Oklahoma met three times in the 2009 regular season and twice in postseason action. The Sooners defeated the Huskers in every meet last season.
Next Up For Nebraska
Nebraska will be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 21, for its first home competition against Ohio State, Air Force and the University of Illinois at Chicago, at 2 p.m. The first 50 UNL students or faculty and staff to present an identification card will receive a free slice of Valentino's pizza.
Scouting No. 3 Oklahoma
Oklahoma has competed in two meets this season and holds a 5-0 record on the year. In its first meet at the Rocky Mountain Open on Jan. 16, the Sooners defeated Nebraska, Air Force, Arizona State and Washington for the win. OU was back in action on Jan. 23, defeating Iowa, 349.500-340.950.
Recently, five current and former Oklahoma gymnasts were named to the United States National Team, including senior Chris Brooks, who won the 2010 Winter Cup all-around title. Freshman Alex Naddour earned a spot on the team for the first time, while freshman Jacob Dalton, junior Steven Legendre and former Sooner and U.S. Olympian Jonathan Horton retained their positions on the team. The five Sooners, along with the other 10 members will comprise the U.S. team until the Visa Championships in August.
Huskers and Sooners in the National Ranks
The Huskers hold a 9th-place ranking in the latest GymInfo poll released on Monday, Feb. 8, while the Sooners hold a 3rd-place ranking. Nebraska is ranked ninth on floor exercise (56.800), 12th on pommel horse (52.275), eighth on still rings (56.950), fourth on vault (62.375), seventh on parallel bars (55.925) and seventh on high bar (55.400). Comparatively, Oklahoma is rated second on floor exercise (60.000), third on pommel horse (56.125), seventh on still rings (57.025), second on vault (62.450), first on parallel bars (57.800) and eighth on high bar (55.275).
Individually, five Huskers rank in the national polls, including senior Kyle Shanahan, who is 11th on floor exercise (14.900), 17th on parallel bars (14.200), 13th on high bar (14.275) and 16th in the all-around (84.575). Senior John Robinson is 15th in the all-around with an average of 84.775, while junior Anthony Ingrelli is tied for seventh on still rings with a 14.675 average. Sophomores Cory Baumgarten and Michael Heredia are tied at 17th on vault with matching averages of 15.625.
Four Sooners rank in the top-10 national rankings, including freshman Jake Dalton, who is No. 2 in the all-around (88.55), third on floor exercise (15.375), first on vault (16.125), second on parallel bars (14.975) and fifth on high bar (14.70). Steven Legendre ranks first on floor exercise (15.95), second on vault (16.10), fourth on parallel bars (14.75) and fourth in the all-around (87.100). Bobby Shortle holds a 10th place ranking on floor exercise with a 14.925 average, while Alex Naddour is second on pommel horse (14.925).
Seventeen Huskers Make Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll
Seventeen current and former members of the Nebraska men's gymnastics team earned spots on the Big 12 Commissioner's Fall Honor Roll, which recognizes a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher during the fall semester.
The list of honorees features 11 gymnasts as repeat selections, including seniors Stefan Wallof, Kyle Shanahan, Josh Rusler, Tony Maras and Bo Benak, former Huskers James Mauldin and T.J. Schmidt and sophomores Michael Killeen and Matthew Forrest. Husker sophomore Cory Baumgarten and former Husker Jacob Ives also earned spots on the Big 12 Honor Roll with perfect 4.0 grade-point averages.
Six gymnasts earned honor roll accolades for the first time, including sophomore Josh Dilworth and newcomers Wyatt Baier, Ben Hall, Andreas Hofer, Mark Ringle and Gabriel Sanchez.
A total of 359 Nebraska student-athletes earned at least a 3.0 GPA during the fall semester.
Winter Cup Report: Huskers Earn Nine Top-30 Finishes at Winter Cup Challenge
Las Vegas, Nev. - Senior all-arounders Kyle Shanahan and John Robinson combined for nine top-30 finishes at the Winter Cup Challenge in Las Vegas, Nev., on Saturday, Feb. 6.
Although Shanahan was an at-large representative in the Winter Cup finals, he pulled together a score of 162.600 over two rounds for 23rd place in the all-around competition. Shanahan also tied for 22nd place on floor exercise with a total score of 27.85 and he tied for 23rd place on pommel horse with a combined total of 26.35. Shanahan also earned 22nd place on still rings (27.05) and high bar (26.70).
Robinson placed 30th in the all-around with a total combined score of 149.700. Robinson earned a score of 83.75 in the preliminaries, but had to scratch floor exercise in the final round, earning him a score of 65.95 on five events in the finals.
Robinson's best finish came on parallel bars, where he notched 14th place overall with a combined total of 27.70. He also earned an 18th-place finish on vault (30.600) and a 21st-place finish on still rings (27.25).
Last Team Time Out: Huskers Earn Five Event Titles in Second-Place Finish
Minneapolis, Minn. - Three Huskers combined for five event titles as the No. 10 Nebraska men's gymnastics team placed second behind No. 8 Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minn., on Saturday, Jan. 30. NU earned a season-high team score of 342.400 for second place, while Minnesota placed first with a score of 350.550 and Air Force placed third with a score of 329.800.
Nebraska earned five individual event titles on the night, including a first-place finish in the all-around by senior John Robinson, who captured his first title of the year with a season-high score of 86.20. Robinson also earned his first career parallel bars title, tying his career-high score of 14.60. Senior all-arounder Kyle Shanahan earned two event crowns, as he tied Minnesota's Aaron Fortunato for top honors on floor exercise (15.20), before earning his first high bar title of the season with a score of 14.65. Junior Anthony Ingrelli notched his second-consecutive event crown of the year on still rings with a season-high score of 14.70.
The Huskers earned five additional top-three finishes, including a second place finish by Shanahan on still rings with a score of 14.40, while Robinson earned a second-place finish on pommel horse with a career-high score of 14.15. Freshman all-arounder Andreas Hofer placed second on vault with a career-high score of 15.90, while junior Bear Danley placed third on high bar with a score of 14.30. Shanahan also earned a third-place finish in the all-around with a score of 85.75.
With four college teams and several junior club teams participating in the meet, Nebraska was forced out of Olympic order for the entire competition. However, the order change did not hinder the Huskers on still rings in the first rotation, as they posted a season-high score of 57.40 behind first- and second-place finishes by Ingrelli and Shanahan. Junior Cory Baumgarten started a string of season-high scores for the Huskers, as he earned a season- and career-high score of 14.00 on the apparatus. Four additional Husker gymnasts bettered their Rocky Mountain Open scores, including Robinson (14.30), Shanahan (14.40), Maras (14.10) and Ingrelli (14.70). After the first rotation, Minnesota led the standings with a score of 60.50 on floor exercise, while Nebraska was in second and Air Force was in third with a score of 50.95 on pommel horse.
Nebraska kept up the momentum in the second rotation, posting a season-high score of 57.65 on floor exercise behind Shanahan's first-place finish. Despite a rough start on the event, all-arounders Shanahan and Robinson stepped up for the Huskers, both posting career-high scores of 15.20 and 14.85, respectively. Freshman all-arounder Andreas Hofer earned a season-high score of 14.00, while junior Bear Danley notched his second-highest career score on the event. After two rotations, the Golden Gophers maintained the lead with a score of 116.85 and Nebraska remained in second with a score of 115.15. Air Force sat out with a bye in the second rotation.
The Huskers moved to pommel horse in the third rotation, earning a season-high score of 53.20 behind Robinson's second-place event finish. The senior all-arounder notched his second career-high of the night with a score of 14.15, topping his previous horse career-high of 14.10 set in the 2008 season. Three more Huskers earned season-high scores, including redshirt freshman David Jacobs (13.40), Danley (12.95) and Shanahan (12.70). Following pommel horse, the Huskers sat out one rotation, while Minnesota took to the still rings and Air Force competed on floor exercise.
NU posted another season-high on high bar in the fourth rotation with a team score of 55.95, as Shanahan captured the high bar event title. Danley also rounded out the top-three finishers, with a season-high score of 14.30. Overall, five Huskers earned season-high scores on high bar, including Danley, Shanahan, Rusler (13.00), sophomore Josh Dilworth (12.95), Hofer (14.00) and Shanahan.
NU earned its best vault in two seasons, as it posted a team score of 62.65. Nebraska set its last team high against Minnesota in Lincoln, Neb., on March 15, 2009, with a 62.50. All-arounder Hofer placed second in the event standings with a team- and career-high score of 15.90. Baumgarten also earned a new career-high score with a 15.65, while Dilworth (15.55) and Shanahan (15.05) earned season-high scores on vault.
The Huskers wrapped up the competition on parallel bars with a score of 55.50, behind Robinson's first-place finish on the event (14.60). Maras and senior Stefan Wallof earned career-highs with scores of 13.55 and 12.55, respectively. Despite a strong effort, Nebraska was unable to overcome Minnesota. The Huskers hold a 16-17-1 overall record to the Golden Gophers and move to 4-2 on the 2010 season.
