18 Huskers to Compete at USA Championships

Lincoln ? This week at the USA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, the Nebraska track and field team will be represented by 18 former, current and future Huskers. Hosted by Drake University at Drake Stadium, the meet is schedule to start on Wednesday, Jun 23 and will run through Sunday, June 27.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

 

In the senior division, the 10 current and four former Huskers that will be competing have combined for three national championships, 38 All-America honors and 23 conference titles while in a Husker uniform.  Headlining the field is former national championship high jumper and 2008 Olympian Dusty Jonas, who also captured eight All-America honors and one Big 12 title while at Nebraska.

 

The group also includes six-time All-America high jumper Epley Bullock, two-time national championship long jumper turned sprinter Angee Henry, three-time Big 12 high jump champion Paul Hamilton, three-time All-America hurdler Kirkland Thornton, three-time Big 12 javelin champion Kayla Wilkinson-Colgrove, three-time All-American Chantae McMillan, two-time Big 12 pole vault champion Natalie Willer, two-time All-America long jumper Chris Phipps, Big 12 400-meter hurdle champion Adam Dailey and Big 12 indoor triple jump champion Leandra McGruder.

 

After one season at Nebraska, Veronica Grizzle (shot put and javelin) and Lincoln native Anne Martin (heptathlon) will compete in the junior division. Future Huskers Ellen Dougherty (800 meters - Moville, Iowa) and Ellie Grooters (400 hurdles ? Fargo, N.D.) will also be competing, as both have signed a letter of intent to join the Huskers for the 2011 season.

 

To compete in the junior division, the athlete must be at least 14 years old on the day of competition but not turn 20 years old during 2010. The top-two finishers in each event in the junior division will also have the opportunity to compete for Team USA at the 2010 IAAF World Junior Championships in Moncton, Canada.
