Lincoln - Head Coach John Walker has announced new additions to the Husker coaching staff, headlined by the hirings of full-time assistant coaches Dan Bassett and Rebecca Sanow (formerly Hornbacher).
Bassett began his role with the Huskers last month, while Sanow will be on board in January 2011 following the birth of her second child. Former NU assistant coach Marty Everding will step in during that time and serve as the interim assistant coach for the 2010 season.
"We have had a lot of continuity with our coaching staff at Nebraska, having only five assistant coaches for two full-time positions in 17 seasons," Walker said. "I thought it was important to bring in coaches who have excellent ability and experience, but also coaches who have a good understanding of our program."
Bassett is a familiar face to the NU soccer program after serving as a volunteer coach for three seasons (2005, 2006 and 2008). During that time, he also coached the Bellevue West High School boys and girls squads and played two seasons for Bellevue University, helping the Bruins compile a 25-12 record. Bassett served several roles while on the Husker support staff, including alumni relations, video operations and gameday operations.
"I am incredibly excited to be returning to the University of Nebraska," Bassett said. "It is a huge opportunity and privilege. This is a position that I will put my heart and soul into. It may be cliché to say that the university has a huge tradition of academic and athletic excellence, but it is true. I am fully aware of those traditions and will aim to not only honor them, but do my best to enhance them."
A native of Bulkington, England, Bassett moved to the United States in 2004 and began his coaching career with club teams in Kansas City and Omaha. He earned an engineering degree from North Warwickshire and Hinckley College in 2002. While in England, Bassett also spent time coaching the Coventry and Birmingham women's Centers of Excellence. He resides in Lincoln with his wife, Stacie, a native of York, Neb.
One of the best players in Husker history, Sanow (Hornbacher) will begin her role as assistant coach in January 2011. Sanow's coaching resume includes six seasons as the head coach at Iowa State, where she became the winningest coach in school history (45 wins) and led the Cyclones to their only NCAA Tournament berth in school history. That notable game took place in Lincoln, Neb., where ISU dropped 5-0 first-round match-up to No. 1 Portland. Sanow was named the 2005 Big 12 Coach of the Year. She stepped away from her position in 2006 due to family commitments.
Sanow began her coaching career at Baylor, spending three seasons (1998-2000) as an assistant coach with the Bears. She served as an assistant coach for the University of Hartford during the 2001 season and was then the interim head coach at Baylor for the 2002 season.
Sanow is among the best players in Husker history. As starting goalkeeper for Nebraska during the 1996 and 1997 seasons, she earned All-America accolades (1996) and Second Team All-Big 12 honors (1996 and 1997). In 1996, she was named the Soccer Buzz Central Region Defensive Player of the Year after finishing fifth in the nation with a 0.51 goals-against average, while also setting the single-season school record with 82 saves. Sanow played in the professional ranks during the 2001 season as a goalkeeper for the Boston Breakers.
A native of Ralston, Neb., Sanow graduated from Nebraska with a psychology degree in 1997 and earned her master's degree in sport management from Baylor in 2000. She is the daughter of Bill Hornbacher, who was a two-year letterwinner for the Husker football team (1968-69).
One of the most recognizable names in the history of Nebraska soccer, Everding will be an interim assistant coach for the 2010 season. Everding previously spent 13 seasons as an assistant coach for the Huskers (1994-2006), developing three of the best goalkeepers in Big 12 history in Rebecca Hornbacher, Karina LeBlanc and Erin Miller. All three were all-conference selections, while Hornbacher was a 1996 All-American and LeBlanc went on to start for the Canadian National Team and the WUSA's Boston Breakers. Nebraska was 210-67 with Everding on staff and qualified for the NCAA Tournament 10 times.
Everding was a player at Queen's University from 1981-1983 and 1986-1988 and later served as an assistant coach before joining Walker's Nebraska staff. He graduated from the Canadian National Coaching Institute and holds a Canadian Level IV coaching license as well as a USSF "B" license.
A native of Kingston, Ontario, Everding graduated from Queen's in 1989 with a bachelor's degree in drama and education.
The final addition to the 2010 coaching staff is three-time All-Big 12 selection Carly Peetz, who will serve as an undergraduate student assistant coach. A native of Lincoln, Peetz completed a very successful Husker career last fall, as she earned 2009 Second Team All-Big 12 honors during her senior season. She was a four-year letterwinner for the Huskers and started all 79 matches of her career, the eighth-most in school history.
Returning to the Husker staff this fall is Geoff Weller (soccer operations), Brandon Bonilla (volunteer assistant coach) and Jordan Moehlenhoff (student manager).
Nebraska opens 2010 competition this Sunday at Denver with its lone exhibition game of the season. The Huskers' season opener is Aug. 22 at New Mexico, while the first home game is Aug. 27 vs. Loyola University.
