Omaha - The Nebraska softball team continued its fall exhibition season on Sunday with a doubleheader sweep of Creighton at the CU Sports Complex. The Huskers won the opener 6-2 and completed the sweep with a 1-0 victory in game two.
Nebraska never trailed in the doubleheader and Head Coach Rhonda Revelle credited the Husker pitching staff for an excellent performance.
"I think the story of the day was that all three of our pitchers pitched really well and pitched with a lot of purpose," Revelle said.
In game one, junior right-hander Haley Workman earned the win, allowing two runs on three hits in 6.0 innings of work. Workman faced eight batters in the first inning, allowing both runs, but settled down from there. She did not allow a hit over her final 5.0 innings and finished with seven strikeouts, including six looking.
Fellow junior right-hander Ashley Hagemann pitched a perfect seventh inning to earn the save. Freshman Taylor Edwards gave the pitching staff all the run support it would need with a three-run homer in the top of the first inning that scored senior Julie Brechtel and junior Ashley Guile.
The Huskers added three more runs in the third. Brechtel began the inning with a single and Guile followed with another single to put runners on first and third. Taylor Edwards then delivered an RBI single to score Brechtel before sophomore Brooke Thomason hit a ball that got past the center fielder, allowing the final two runs to score.
In game two, the Huskers were held to just two hits, but one of those hits was a solo home run from senior Heidi Foland to lead off the game. Freshman right-hander Tatum Edwards earned the victory in the circle. She tossed 4.0 hitless innings and had eight strikeouts in a 66-pitch performance. Hagemann again came on and earned the save by allowing only two hits over the final 3.0 innings. Creighton had the tying runner in scoring position following a two-out double in the bottom of the seventh, before Hagemann secured the win by getting a ground out to second to end the game.
Nebraska wraps up its fall season on Saturday, Oct. 2 at Bowlin Stadium. The Huskers will host a collection of all-stars from the National ProFastpitch league, including Olympican Cat Osterman, beginnin. at Noon. Following the first game, Nebraska will officially retire the No. 42 jersey worn by Peaches James in an on-field ceremony.
