The Nebraska men’s gymnastics team heads for the mountains this weekend to open the 2011 season at the Rocky Mountain Open on Saturday in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The No. 9 Huskers, who enter their second season under head coach Chuck Chmelka, will take on No. 3 Oklahoma, No. 13 Air Force and Arizona State at the Cadet West Gymnasium beginning at 7 p.m. (Central).
Last season, the Huskers took runner-up honors at the Rocky Mountain Open, trailing only Oklahoma. It is the 16th time in 21 seasons the Huskers will open their season at the Rocky Mountain Open, which started in 1981. Nebraska has finished in the top two spots at the competition 13 times, including seven first-place finishes.
Returing All-American, Anthony Ingrelli leads the Huskers into the 2011 season. Ingrelli, a Senior co-captain from Milwaukee, Wisconsin became NU's first All-American on still rings since Josh Rasile in 2004
“The Rocky Mountain Open is always tough,” Chmelka said. “It’s the opening tournament, so no one is in great shape, but this will be a good opportunity to see where we are at.”
