The No. 8 Nebraska men's gymnastics team travels to Iowa City, Iowa this weekend for a dual against the No.10 Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m.
Nebraska is coming of a second-place finish last week against No. 3 Oklahoma and No. 13 Illinois-Chicago. The Huskers posted a season-high score of 349.70, behind OU's 360.60 and ahead of UIC's 332.50.
Coach Chuck Chmelka said last weeks performance was the best he's seen from the Huskers this year, despite losing to OU. The Huskers led the Sooners several times throughtout the meet. The last time coming after the fourth rotation, NU led OU 236.70-236.60.
Co-Captain Andreas Hofer and freshman Wyatt Aycock are expected to compete in the all-around for the Huskers at Iowa.
Junior Dave Jacobs will compete in his first meet since last year after undergoing shoulder surgery at the end of last season. Since the surgery last summer, Jacobs has been working toward a full recovery. Although Jacobs is a true all-arounder, Coach Chmelka is slowly working him back into the rotation a few events at a time. Jacobs will compete on pommel horse and high bar on Saturday for the Huskers.
Redshirt freshman, Mark Ringle had an impressive day for the Huskers last Sunday. Ringle posted career highs on all four of his events. He scored a 14.60 on floor, a 15.50 on vault, a 14.10 on parallel bars and a 14.40 on high bar. With that outstanding performance Sunday, Coach Chuck Chmelka nominated Ringle for Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Gymnast of the Week honors. He is ranked at No. 19 on the high bar.
Freshman Eric Schryver continues to move his way up the national rankings on pommel horse. This week Schryver sits at No.4 in the country behind Illinois senior Dan Ribeiro, Ohio State junior Ty Echard and Penn State sophomore Felix Aronovich. Schryver is the only freshman in the top five on pommel horse.
Schryver won his first collegiate event title in the home meet against Air Force on Jan. 30, posting a 14.90. He hit a career-high 15.30 against Oklahoma and UIC. Schryver also ranks nationally on high bar coming in at 18th.
Scouting the Hawkeyes
The University of Iowa heads into Satuday's meet ranked No.10 in the country. Last week the Hawkeyes lost a confrence meet against No.9 Minnesota, losing 336.500-330.100 in Iowa City.
On floor, Iowa is lead by sophomore Matt Mcgrath, who ranks 15th in the nation on floor. Mcgrath also ranks nationally on vault.
On pommel horse the Hawkeyes are led by senior All-American Mike Jiang. He is currently ranked 18th on pommel horse, averaging a score of 14.033, just ahead of senior Ben Ketelsen, who averages 13.967. Ketelsen is also ranked No. 18 on vault.
Sophomore all-arounder Anton Gryshayev leads the Hawkeye still rings team and currently ranks seventh in the country on the event. Gryshayev has averaged a 14.900 on rings this season.
Iowa has three gymnasts ranked in the top 20 on vault. Ketelsen holds the No. 18 spot(15.533), while Mcgrath and junior Javier Balboa are both ranked 20th (15.500).
On parallel bars, redshirt freshman Jack McClay leads the Hawkeyes, ranking 16th in the nation, averaging a 14.100.
The Huskers return home on Sunday, March 6 to face Stanford at the Devaney Center at 2 p.m.
