Colorado Springs, Colo. – Several Huskers provided strong individual performances and the No. 11 Nebraska men's gymnastics team claimed fourth at the 2011 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships on Saturday.
In a conference race that featured the nation's top three teams, No. 2 Stanford won the MPSF title with a 362.250, edging No. 1 Oklahoma (360.700). No. 3 California settled for third (356.050), while NU posted its highest road team score of the season with a 346.500 to finish fourth. The hosts from No. 8 Air Force managed a fifth-place finish with a 344.800.
“Overall I am very happy with how we performed. We had our highest road team score of the year, and we had our highest hit percentage of any road meet as well," Nebraska Coach Chuck Chmelka said. "We had a few hiccups throughout the meet, but overall I am very happy with how the guys performed.”
Senior Anthony Ingrelli earned the highest individual finish for the Huskers, grabbing fourth place with a 15.30 on still rings. Ingrelli finished just 0.05 behind Oklahoma’s Troy Nitzky, who took third.
Nebraska started the afternoon on vault with the highest event score of the night - 63.20. Junior Will Eastman and sophomore Wyatt Baier both notched team highs of 15.85. Eastman's score was a career high.
The Huskers moved to parallel bars, where freshman Wyatt Aycock tallied a team-best 14.95, which was good for sixth. Freshman Eric Schryver (14.55) and junior David Jacobs (14.30) both earned career highs on the event. As a team, NU’s parallel bars team earned a 58.20, just one-tenth of a point off its season high.
Bear Danley’s 14.65 led the NU high bar team to a 57.00 team score. Danley’s career-high earned him a seventh-place finish. Other top performers for the Huskers on high bar were Schryver (14.35) and Aycock (14.25).
Co-captain Andreas Hofer tallied a 14.90, which led the way for Nebraska’s floor team. Hofer’s score earned him an 11th-place finish. Freshman Andrew House added a career-best 14.40.
Aycock led the way for the Huskers on pommel horse with a 14.00 to finish ninth. Hofer added a 13.80 to take 13th.
The Huskers closed out their final MPSF Championships on rings, where Ingrelli led the way with his 15.30. As a team, Nebraska earned a 56.75.
Nebraska had two gymnasts compete in the all-around on Saturday. Aycock finished seventh with an 86.80, while Hofer settled for eighth with an 85.65.
The Huskers will compete one final time this season in the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio, April 14-16. The first day will be the qualifying round. The second day will be the team and all-around finals. The NCAA meet will end on the third day with individual event championships.
