Lincoln - Nebraska sophomore midfielder Ari Romero was one of 20 players selected to attend Mexico's under-20 national camp in Mexico City, Mexico, starting on Wednesday, July 20. Romero earned an invite to Mexico City after previously participating in a week-long camp in San Diego as a member of Mexico's Under-20 National Team pool.
Romero will look to earn a spot on the national team that will compete at the 2012 CONCACAF Under-20 Women's Championships, where three teams will advance to the 2012 FIFA Under-20 Women's World Cup in Uzbekistan. Mexico placed third at the CONCACAF Championships in 2006 and 2008, before losing to Team USA in the finals of the 2010 championships.
Romero was also invited to compete for Mexico at the World University Game in Shenzhen, China, from August 12-23, but will be unable to attend as the event conflicts with the Huskers' collegiate schedule. Nebraska opens the 2011 season on Friday, Aug. 19 when they host North Carolina as the Nebraska Soccer Field.
As a freshman in 2010, Romero started all 21 games for Head Coach John Walker. The Surprise, Ariz., native totaled five points on the year with one goal and three assists. She scored the game-winning goal in Nebraska's overtime win at Texas Tech and was then named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.
