Huskers Host Annual Alumni Meet

Lincoln - The Nebraska swimming and diving team is hosting eighth-straight alumni meet this Saturday at the Devaney Natatorium. The Alumni Meet is held every year and pits the alumni of the Nebraska teams past vs. the current Huskers.

The Alumni Meet brings together both the past and the present of the Nebraska swimming and diving program. This year's meet has twenty confirmed alumni who will attend.

Established in 2002, the Alumni Meet has been a constant on the Nebraska swimming schedule.  This year, the event serves as a final warm up before the regular season begins on Saturday, Oct. 22 against South Dakota State.

Following the Alumni Meet, the Huskers will take a week off before hosting South Dakota State. The first regular season dual of the year will take place at the Devaney Natatorium on Saturday, Oct. 22.

+Shannon Guy and Bailey Pons both started the season off strong, winning two events at the Scarlet vs. Cream Intrasquad. Six total Huskers won events on the day.

Last Time Out: Cream Defeats Scarlet, 140-128

The Nebraska swimming and diving team kicked off its first season in the Big Ten on Friday afternoon in a dual that saw the Cream team defeat the Scarlets, 140-128. The dual was close throughout, with each team winning seven events. The win pulls the Cream squad to 4-4 in the all-time series.

The Cream were led by Shannon Guy who won two events on the day (100-yard breast, 100-yard fly). Ariel Weech, Morgan Flannigan and Katie Davis also picked up wins for the cream squad.

The Scarlet's Bailey Pons won two events on the day in the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle. Ellan Dufour of the Scarlet also won the 100-yard backstroke.

The Huskers begin their regular season on Saturday, Oct. 22 when the South Dakota State Jackrabbits come to the Devaney Center for the first dual of the year.

This Time Last Year:

The Nebraska swimming and diving team battled former Nebraska swimmers Saturday morning at the Devaney Natatorium in the 10th annual Alumni Meet.

The current Huskers pulled out a close win over the Alumni 110-88, led by individual wins by Ashley Reiter in the 50-yard breaststroke, Kelsey Larson in the 100-yard breaststoke and Hayley Martin in the 50-yard backstroke.

The talented alumni were led by Mike Irvin, who had three individual wins in the 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard IM and 100-yard butterfly. Irvin was a four-time letterwinner at Nebraska from 1986 to 1989. Other alumni winners include Allan Kelsey (100-yard freestyle, 50-yard butterfly) and Tad Borrett (50-yard freestyle).

Fifteen alumni attended the meet, though not all competed. Other notable alumni in attendance included Colleen and Karen Criss, Mariah Hutchinson and Sarah Ziegelmann from the 2009 squad.
