Romero to Compete for Mexican National Team

Lincoln - Nebraska sophomore midfielder Ari Romero has been invited to participate in the Mexican National team's friendly competition with France in Fort de France, Martinique on Sunday, Nov. 20. Romero is currently in Mexico City, Mexico, with the national team and will be in Martinique from Nov. 19-22.

Earlier this summer, Romero was one of 20 players selected to attend Mexico's under-20 national camp in Mexico City, Mexico. She earned an invite to Mexico City after previously participating in a week-long camp in San Diego, Calif., as a member of Mexico's Under-20 National Team pool.

Romero is looking to earn a spot on the national team that will compete at the 2012 CONCACAF Under-20 Women's Championships, where three teams will advance to the 2012 FIFA Under-20 Women's World Cup in Uzbekistan. Mexico placed third at the CONCACAF Championships in 2006 and 2008, before losing to Team USA in the finals of the 2010 championships.

Romero was also invited to compete for Mexico earlier this year at the World University Game in Shenzhen, China, from August 12-23, but was unable to attend, as the event conflicted with the Huskers' collegiate schedule.

During her first two seasons at Nebraska, Romero has started all 39 games for Head Coach John Walker. The Surprise, Ariz., native totaled four points on two assists and one goal in 2011 after notching three assists and one goal as a freshman in 2010. She scored the game-winning goal in Nebraska's 2010 overtime win at Texas Tech and was then named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.
