Columbus, Ohio - A freshman and a senior teamed up to give Rhonda Revelle her 750th victory as Nebraska's Head Softball Coach, as the Huskers completed a doubleheader sweep at Ohio State with a 3-2, eight-inning victory in Saturday's nightcap at Buckeye Field.
Senior right-hander Ashley Hagemann was impressive in the circle and freshman Mattie Fowler delivered the game-winning hit, as Nebraska swept the doubleheader to win its first Big Ten Conference road series.
Nebraska jumped out to a 2-0 lead three batters into the game when junior Gabby Banda delivered a two-run home run. The Huskers missed several chances to add to their lead over the next few innings, as Ohio State chipped away at the lead. The Buckeyes pulled to within one with a run in the bottom of the first and tied the game in the bottom of the sixth.
That run sent the game to extra innings, where Fowler came through again. After producing the game-winning single in the top of the eighth inning of Nebraska's 5-4 win at Minnesota on April 1 and scoring the game-winning run in the top of the eighth inning at UNO on Wednesday, Fowler produced a one-out, RBI single against Ohio State to drive in the winning run.
Hagemann then retired the side in order in the seventh to wrap up the 750th victory of Revelle's Husker career. In improving to 21-13 on the season, Hagemann allowed only one earned run in a season-high-tying 8.0 innings, scattering five hits and striking out seven. She did not walk a single batter and passed Ashley DeBuhr for second place on the Nebraska all-time strikeout chart.
Fowler's only hit of the game was the game-winner, as Nebraska out-hit Ohio State, 6-5. Banda finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, while classmate Courtney Breault was 2-for-4 and scored the game-winning run.
Ohio State fell to 26-18 with the loss and dropped to 5-8 in conference play. Melanie Nichols (9-7) took the loss. She tossed a six-hitter and allowed three runs, while walking seven and striking out seven.
Nebraska and Ohio State wrap up the three-game series at 1 p.m. (Central) on Sunday.
