Five Former Huskers Advance to Sectionals

Five former Husker golfers advanced to the sectional qualifying stage of the U.S. Open Championship following impressive performances on various Midwest courses over the last two weeks.

Jim Troy, Ryan Lenahan, Andrew Wyatt, Judd Cornell and Brandon Crick advanced through four of the 111 local qualifiers around the country to come one step closer to competing at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa., for the second major of 2013, June 13-16.

Troy was one of eight qualifiers who competed at Beechmont Country Club in Cleveland, Ohio on May 7. He shot a 1-over-par 72 to earn a berth in a five-way playoff for three spots. Troy, who lettered for Nebraska from 2000 to 2003, earned one of the three spots to advance to sectional qualifying.

Lenahan, who lettered for the Huskers in 2003 and 2005-07, also advanced from a playoff. After carding a 3-under-par 67 at Morris Park Country Club in South Bend, Ind., on May 15, Lenahan went into a three-way playoff for two positions. He and Chase Wright earned the spots along with Clark Klaasen, who fired a 66.

Andrew Wyatt posted a 3-under-par 69 on May 7 at Green Tree Country Club in Midland, Texas to finish one stroke behind the medalist, Matthew Smith. Wyatt topped Terrance Begnal and Cody Gribble in a playoff for the second spot. Wyatt lettered for NU from 2008 to 2011.

Cornell and Crick both competed at Shadow Ridge Country Club on May 14 and each shot 3-under-par 69s. Cornell played for the Huskers from 2003 to 2006 and Crick competed at Nebraska in 2009 and 2010.

Thirteen sites will host U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying, 11 of which are in the United States. The England and Japan sites will take place on May 27, while the U.S. qualifiers are on June 3. Every site will consist of 36 holes on the scheduled day.
