Lincoln, Neb. - Nebraska swimming and diving head coach Pablo Morales recently announced the signing of recruits Cassandra Brassard, Jordan Ehly, Aimee Fischer, Francesca Giganti and Amanda Moran for the 2014-15 season.
"We are very proud of our Fall 2013 signee list and very excited that they will be Huskers in 2014," Morales said. "Each brings an ideal mix of outstanding accomplishments and high improvement potential. Beyond what they bring to the program athletically, they will add great character, strong work ethic, motivation and sense of team. They are a perfect fit to a team of strong character, work ethic - in the pool and classroom, team unity and community involvement."
Cassandra Brassard
Hailing from Regina, Saskatchewan, Brassard is a backstroke and middle-distance freestyle swimmer. She was a top-10 finisher at the 2013 Canadian Summer Nationals in the 50 back, 100 back and 800 free. Brassard was also a medalist at the 2013 Age Group Nationals, a 2013 Canada Games provincial swim team captain and a provincial opening ceremonies flag bearer.
In the classroom, Brassard has maintained an academic average of over 90 percent throughout high school, earning Academic Honor Roll with Distinction all four years. Additionally, Brassard is a member of the Canadian Sports Centre Saskatchewan Athlete Advisory Council.
Jordan Ehly
Las Cruces, N.M., native Jordan Ehly comes to Nebraska out of Mayfield High School. The breaststroke and individual medley swimmer holds New Mexico state records in the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes for the Girls 15 & 16 Long Course division. Ehly was also a finalist at the Junior National Championships for her swim club, Wild West Aquatics.
In an interview with the Las Cruces Sun-News, Ehly commented about her decision to join the Huskers, saying, "I've always wanted to get a scholarship to a big D-I school for swimming. The fact that I've reached that goal is unbelievable."
Aimee Fischer
Aimee Fischer joins the Huskers as a middle-distance freestyle and individual medley competitor out of Lincoln Southwest High School. Fischer is a two-time defending Nebraska high school state champion in the 500-yard freestyle. She also won the state championship 200-yard freestyle in 2012-13 for the Silver Hawks. In addition, Fischer has collected two long course and two short course swimmer-of-the-year honors from Midwestern Swimming over the past three years as a member of the Greater Nebraska Swim Team.
A performer in the classroom as well, Fischer has been selected to Southwest's honor roll all four years and was named a member of the academic all-conference team the past three years. Fischer also earned an academic letter in 2013 and has served as a Midwestern Swimming Athlete Representative since 2011.
Francesca Giganti
Francesca Giganti joins Natasha Chikina's Husker diving squad out of Parkway West High School in St. Louis, Mo. As a junior in 2013, Giganti finished second in the Missouri High School State Championships for the Longhorns, tallying a score of 416.50.
Giganti also competed for the St. Louis Diving Club, finishing second and third in the platform and three-meter dives at the 2013 USA Diving Summer Junior Zone C Championships. Her scores qualified her for the 2013 USA Diving Junior National Championships in both events. In addition, Giganti competed in the synchronized women's platform at the 2013 USA Diving National Preliminary Zone A Championships. Giganti and her partner Lauren Callin finished first (204.51).
Amanda Moran
A native of Lockport, Ill., Moran comes to NU out of Lockport Township High School. The backstroke and butterfly swimmer was a finalist at both the 2013 Sectional Championships and the 2013 Illinois High School State Championships. Moran also competed at the 2013 Illinois Senior Championships for the Academy Bullets Swim Club, claiming the 100-yard backstroke title.
Described by her high school coach, Grant Ferkaluk, as someone who encourages others and brings them together, Moran has shown leadership in and out of the water. The high school team captain was also a member of the French National Honors Society at Lockport Township.
