Kokesh, Green Earn All-America Status

Oklahoma City, Okla. – Nebraska’s Robert Kokesh (174) and James Green (157) each went 2-0 in consolation matches during Session IV of the NCAA Championships on Friday night to earn All-America honors for the second consecutive season.

Kokesh and Green become Nebraska’s 94th and 95th All-Americans in school history. Last season, Kokesh finished third, while Green took seventh for the second consecutive year.

As a team, the Huskers are in 16th place with 32.5 points heading into the final day of competition. Penn State leads the team standings with 91 points.

Kokesh collected an 8-2 decision over Illinois’ Tony Dallago in his first match of the fourth session. Kokesh earned two takedowns in the first period to build a 4-1 advantage before escaping from the down position to take a 5-1 lead into the third stanza. Dallago started down and earned an escape, but Kokesh took him down and added a point for riding time.

In his second match, Kokesh grappled against seventh-seeded Tyler Wilps of Pittsburgh. After a scoreless first period, the pair traded escapes in the second and third periods to head to sudden victory in a 1-1 tie. The score remained 1-1 after sudden victory before Kokesh escaped in the tiebreaker to collect a 2-1 triumph.

Kokesh is 36-2 on the season heading into Saturday’s action. He will face No. 4 seed Mike Evans of Iowa in the consolation semifinals.

Green (157) notched two bonus-point victories in his wrestleback matches to earn a spot against No. 7 seed Brian Realbuto of Cornell in Saturday’s consolation semifinals. Green’s first win was a 12-2 major decision over Joseph LaVallee of Missouri. Green managed four takedowns in the bout before adding a point for riding time.

In his second match, Green raced out to an 11-0 lead after the opening stanza against fifth-seeded Isaac Jordan of Wisconsin. Green managed a takedown in the second period and added nearfall points to avenge a loss from earlier this season in dominant fashion, 15-0. Green is 33-2 on the season.

Session V, consisting of wrestleback semifinals and the third-, fifth- and seventh-place matches, starts on Saturday at 10 a.m. CT. Session VI, which consists of the championship finals, begins on Saturday at 7 p.m.
