Husker Nation Helps NU Set World Record

A Big Red "Thank You" is in order after the Greatest Fans in College Athletics helped the Nebraska softball program set a world record last Saturday. More than 2,200 fans came out and enjoyed all the fun and festivities of the third annual World's Largest Softball Tailgate before watching the Huskers sweep a doubleheader from Ohio State.

Official attendance for the completely free event was 2,204, which not only shattered the previous record set last year against Michigan (1,840) but also marked the largest crowd in school history and the first Nebraska softball game to draw 2,000 fans.

The fans were treated to 80-degree temperatures, free hot dogs, chips and Pepsi products, along with inflatable games, face painters, balloon artists, trike races, a live band, a live pre-game show, raffle drawings and much more.

"Thank you!" were the first words exclaimed by Husker Head Coach Rhonda Revelle on Monday as she reflected upon the record-setting day. "What a day we had at Bowlin Stadium last Saturday…2,204 in attendance, a new tailgate record and the largest home crowd in school history. We cannot tell you how much it means to our players to feel your energy and hear your support."

The Huskers got an early chance to hear that support when Taylor Edwards continued the excitement from the tailgate by leading off the bottom of the first inning of game one with her 50th career home. Her blast ignited Nebraska to an 8-0 run-rule victory, as the Huskers, fueled on by their home fans, hit four home runs in the game.

The largest crowd in school history got to witness another 8-0 run-rule victory in game two, capping a terrific day at beautiful Bowlin Stadium. Taylor Edwards again opened the scoring with a solo home run, before the Huskers exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning to earn their fifth straight run-rule victory, a school record.

The energetic crowd at Bowlin Stadium has helped Nebraska win seven straight games, all of which were played at home. In those seven games, the Huskers have outscored their opponents 66-4.

For the continued support of Nebraska softball, for the record turnout on Saturday and for showing the world There is No Place Like Nebraska, Coach Revelle salutes you, Husker Nation!

"Saturday illustrates what makes Nebraska and Husker Nation so unique and special. It was simply an electric day, and one our program will never forget."
