Wong Named Honda Award Finalist

University of Nebraska’s senior Emily Wong is one of four finalists for the 2014 Honda Sports Award for gymnastics, as announced by the Collegiate Women’s Sports Awards (CWSA). Wong is joined by Katherine Grable of the University of Arkansas, University of Alabama’s Kim Jacob and Bridget Sloan from the University of Florida and last year’s Honda Award winner.

The Honda Sports Award is presented annually by the CWSA to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA sanctioned sports and signifies “the best of the best in collegiate athletics”. The winner of the sport award becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2014 Honda Cup. 

Wong, the 2014 AAI Award (American Athletic Inc.) winner captured All-America honors in the floor finals finishing eighth at the NCAA Gymnastics Championships and captured sixth-place overall in the all-around. The Big Ten Gymnast of the Year, capped one of the most successful senior seasons by a Nebraska gymnast after winning 37 event titles during the year and remained undefeated in the all-around during the regular-season.

After the NCAA Championships Wong now owns 11 All-America awards to become tied with Emily Parsons and Heather Brink for the most in Nebraska school history. Wong looks to become just the second Husker to earn the gymnastics honor, joining Heather Brink, who earned the award in 2000.

The Collegiate Women Sports Awards has honored the nation’s top NCAA women athletes for 37 years, recognizing superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service. Since commencing its sponsorship in 1986, Honda has provided more than $2.7 million in institutional grants to the universities of the award winners and nominees to support women’s athletics programs at the institutions.
