Nebraska women’s gymnast Emily Wong captured first-team Capital One Academic All-America honors, when the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced its women’s at large teams Thursday June, 5. The award follows Wong’s selection to the CoSIDA Academic All-District At-Large team last month.
Wong, an 11-time All-American in competition for Coach Dan Kendig’s squad, earned her second CoSIDA Academic All-America honor as she was selected second-team last year as a junior. The native of Grand Forks, N.D., posted a stellar 3.92 GPA as a nutrition science major.
Wong, the 2014 AAI Award winner and Big Ten Gymnast of the Year, capped her Husker career with one of the best senior seasons by a Nebraska gymnast in school history. Through the regular-season, Wong captured 32 event titles, remained undefeated in the all-around and posted some of the top scores in the country. She took home three All-America honors at the 2014 NCAA Championships to push her total to 11 honors tying with Emily Parsons and Heather Brink for the most awards in school history.
At the conference level, she collected two conference titles on beam and floor where she posted a perfect 10.00. Wong is only the second Husker gymnast to record a 10.00 on the event. She was the 2014 Seattle Regional all-around champion earning her 10th all-around crown of her senior season.
Wong continued to stockpile honors both in the gym and the classroom in 2014, as she was selected as Nebraska’s Female Student-Athlete of the Year and a Honda Award Finalist. Wong became the second Nebraska gymnast presented with the AAI American Award, an honor annually given to the nation’s top gymnast on the basis of athleticism, academic excellence and civic responsibility. Wong was also awarded the Big Ten Medal of honor and Big Ten Wayne Duke Postgraduate Scholarship.
Wong captured the 15th CoSIDA Academic All-America award in program history for the Husker women’s gymnastics team, while pushing Nebraska’s nation-leading total across all sports to 311.
