Kuhlkin Wins Doubles Gold in Hong Kong

Current Nebraska bowler Liz Kuhlkin had a successful weekend at the 2014 World Youth Championships at the South China Athletic Association Bowling Center in Hong Kong. Kuhlkin, a senior for NU, as well as current senior Sarah Lokker of Arkansas State University won the doubles event 370-361 over Japan.

Kuhlkin delivered a powerful strike on her first shot in the 10th frame to lift her and Lokker to the victory.

In an interview done with Matt Cannizzaro of the USBC and bowl.com, Kuhlkin noted that going into the 10th frame, she simply wanted to get the ball off of her hand.

“Going into that frame, I just wanted to get the ball off my hand," said Kuhlkin. "I've been in that situation before because I bowl anchor in college, but it's so much different to step up wanting to make your teammates, coaches and entire country proud. It's almost surreal right now, and it's such an honor to be here representing our country."

With the doubles event now over, Kuhlkin remains in the hunt for the all-event category, where she currently stands fourth with an average score of 207.83, ranking as the top American in the tournament.

Kuhlkin wasn't the only Husker that shined during summer competition, incoming freshman Julia Bond earned two medals at the 52nd Lee Evans Tournament of the Americas. 

A member of Junior Team USA, Bond earned a gold medal as Team USA easily defeated Venezuela 7,769-7122. Bond also finished second in the women's youth individual competition, scoring a 6105 total pinfall for the entire tournament.
