Midland, Texas - The Nebraska women’s tennis team rounded out the opening of their fall season Sunday evening at the Racquet Club Invitational in Midland, Texas. Due to rain cancellations, the tournament was cut short but the Huskers gained valuable experience in both singles and doubles play.
Junior Maggy Lehmicke faced Katy Collins of Texas State and won 8-2. Because of the rain delays, the matches were cut short to an eight games pro set. She then played Rachel Daniell of UAB and won 9-8. In the third round she lost to Jean Runglerdkriangkrai of Pepperdine 8-4.
Junior transfer from BYU Mackenna Maddox lost her first match to Catherine Ragon of UAB 8-1. In the back draw she battled back to defeat Melinda Johnson of KU 8-5.
Sophomore Lisa Andersson lost her first match against Angeles de los Rio of UTA, 9-8(5) then recovered to defeat KU’s Caroline Henderson 8-3.
Sophomore Spurti Shivalingaiah faced Elaine Simon of UAB in the first round and lost 9-7. She finished strong with an 8-4 victory against UNT’s Agustina Valenzeula.
The invite ended in doubles where Lehmicke and Shivalingaiah teamed up to face Rice’s Durkin and Zinko and lost 6-0. Andersson and Maddox faced SMU's Dishkova and Verner where they lost 6-4. Both doubles teams moved on to victories in the second round of doubles.
“I feel this weekend was a good start of the fall season,” Nebraska assistant coach German Dalmagro said. “We were very unfortunate with the weather but I think we got better the more we played, and we are happy about that. We only had one team practice prior to this tournament, and both of the doubles teams were new, so it takes a while to figure out each player's tendencies, but I am happy on how they played their second round. Before the tournament we talked about going out there and competing hard. The team is excited about next weekend and ready to compete again.”
The next event scheduled for the Huskers is the Missouri Invitational Sept. 19-21 at Kansas City, Mo.
