No. 1 Huskers Heading Back to Texas

The NTCA No. 1-rated Nebraska women’s bowling team continues its 2015 season this weekend at the 17-team SFA Stormin’ Ladyjack Classic, held at Palace Lanes in Houston. The three-day-event begins Friday morning at 9:35 a.m. with six sets of 5-Game Baker Matches and will conclude Sunday morning with best four-out-of-seven Baker Matches at 8:30 am.

NU will face off with an extremely talented 17-team field while in Houston, as assistant coach Paul Klempa mentioned, the Huskers will just try to keep doing what they have been doing while at the Ladyjack Classic.

“We are going to keep on going. Over the last five tournaments we have gauged who we are, the best five, and who is the best off the bench, and really it is just the same plan of attack we have had,” Klempa said. “It is hard to plan everything out before you get down there, deciding who is going to play and who is not but we will see.”

Nebraska Head Coach Bill Straub added that the team has been really competing hard lately, which should boost the team during competition this weekend.

“They are real good right now, they are playing really well and are highly motivated,” Straub said.

The weekend’s tournament also serves as a homecoming for Husker junior Melanie Crawford. Crawford is in her first year with NU after being a two-time letter winner at host school Stephen F. Austin University.

A Plano, Texas native and Allen High School graduate, Crawford produced a decorated high school career in Texas, as she compiled a 224 average as a senior in 2011-12 - the highest average of any high school bowler in Texas. Crawford led Allen to a state championship in 2009 and runner-up finish in 2010.

Huskers Ranked No. 1 in Latest NTCA Poll

The National Tenpin Coaches Association released its latest women’s collegiate bowling rankings Wednesday afternoon, as Nebraska again was rated No. 1 over second place Farleigh Dickinson University.

NU topped FDU at January’s Prairie View Invitational and that victory was probably the deciding factor as the Huskers edged the Knights by only six poll points.  The two schools received all the first-place votes.

Arkansas State, Central Missouri maintained their poll positions at No. 3 and 4 while Stephen F. Austin jumped from eighth to fifth since the last poll in late December.
