Wichita, Kan. - The Nebraska softball team scored eight runs in its final three at bats to defeat South Dakota, 8-3, in the first of two games Saturday at the Shocker Invitational in Wichita, Kan.

The game was scoreless heading into the bottom of the fourth, when Nebraska scored the game's first run. The Huskers then answered South Dakota run-scoring innings with four runs in the bottom of the fifth and three runs in the bottom of the sixth. The late offense powered Nebraska to its seventh win of the season, as the Huskers improved to 7-9. The win was the 850th victory at Nebraska for Husker Head Coach Rhonda Revelle, who was coaching in her 1,300th game for the Big Red.

Junior right-hander Emily Lockman (4-5) earned the win, allowing three runs on five hits in 5.0 innings. Sophomore right-hander Cassie McClure earned her second save, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings of one-hit relief.

Both teams missed scoring chances in the first inning, with South Dakota (4-7-1) leaving the bases loaded and Nebraska squandering a leadoff double from junior Kiki Stokes.

Neither team mounted much offense until a two-out Husker rally in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Kylee Muir began the rally with a two-out walk, before classmate Steph Pasquale ripped an RBI double off the wall in center to give Nebraska a 1-0 lead.

South Dakota tied the game in the top of the fifth on a two-out solo home run from Yvon Minogue.

The Huskers then capitalized on a critical Wichita State error to plate four runs in the bottom of the fifth and take a 5-1 lead. The first two batters were retired before Stokes was hit by a two-out pitch. Junior Alicia Armstrong then lifted a high fly ball to left field. USD left fielder Morgan Hancock fought the sun and was unable to make the catch, as the ball deflected off her glove, allowing Stokes to score. Sophomore MJ Knighten then singled before a two-run double from McClure and an RBI double from Pasquale.

Trailing 5-1, South Dakota began the top of the sixth with a double and a single. That marked the end of the game for Lockman, as McClure came on in relief. McClure quickly retired the first two batters before a two-run double from Shelby Keil trimmed Nebraska's lead to 5-3.

Nebraska answered back in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore Kat Woolman worked a leadoff walk before junior Dawna Tyson laced a single to right. Tyson's single was hit so hard it was misplayed by the right fielder, allowing Woolman to score and give Nebraska a 6-3 lead. Freshman Kaylan Jablonski followed with a pinch-hit single to put runners at the corners with no outs. The next two Huskers were then retired before Knighten blooped a two-run single to right field that put Nebraska on top 8-3.

Knighten and McClure each produced two RBIs for Nebraska, while Knighten also had two hits, joining Pasquale with a multi-hit game.

Madison Frain (1-4) took the loss for South Dakota, allowing five runs (one earned) in 4.2 innings.

Nebraska wraps up Saturday play at the Shocker Invitational with a second game against host Wichita State.
