Quartet of Huskers Earn Degrees

Amanda and Jennifer Lauer joined former Huskers Jamie Schleppenbach and Emily Wong among 55 student-athletes who received their diplomas during spring commencement on Saturday, May 9 at the Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Amanda and Jennifer graduated with a bachelors in nutrition sciences on Saturday with minors in psychology and child, youth and family studies. Both Lauer sisters were three-time NACGC/W Scholastic All-Americans, three-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholars and three-time Academic All-Big Ten selections. The duo was also part of the university’s inaugural class of Nebraska Outstanding Scholar Awards, which honors senior student-athletes who hold a cumulative grade-point average of 3.9 or higher. The Sioux City, Iowa, natives will both attend the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha next fall for physical therapy.

Schleppenbach, a two-time All-American, earned her degree as a double major in advertising and public relations and psychology. She was one of the Huskers’ most dependable beam workers in her senior season, earning first-team All-America honors at the 2014 NCAA Championships after finishing in third with a 9.8875 score. Schleppenbach earned first-team accolades on vault as a freshman in 2011.

Wong received her degree in nutrition sciences with minors in child, youth and family studies and psychology. The Grand Forks, N.D., native was an 11-time All-American in her career with the Huskers, tying for the school record with Emily Parsons and Heather Brink. A four-time NACGC/W All-American, Wong earned the Big Ten Wayne Duke Postgraduate Scholarship award and was named Nebraska’s female student-athlete of the year for 2014. Wong was one of the Huskers’ most decorated gymnasts in school history, going undefeated in the regular season in the all-around as a senior. Her dominance led her to win the 2014 AAI Award, given to the country’s most outstanding female gymnast as she finished her career with a stellar 77 event titles. Wong will attend Des Moines University for physical therapy in the fall.

NU’s May 2015 graduates came from near and far to call Nebraska home during their careers. The group came to Lincoln from 20 states, including 14 native Nebraskans. Members of the graduating class also came from Colombia and Jamaica.

Nebraska continues to feature one of the highest graduation rates in the country, while leading the nation in the number of CoSIDA Academic All-Americans (315) and NCAA Top 10 Award winners (17) across all sports.
