#LosHuskers Day 3: Visiting Toledo

Madrid -- Monday was a day of sightseeing for the Huskers, as the team visited the historic city of Toledo, which is located about an hour outside of Madrid.

The first stop was Mirador del Valle, which provided a breathtaking view from above the city, including the Alcazar fortress, which overlooks Toledo, and the Gothic Cathedral. The city’s layout has remained the same since the 14th century and is heavily influenced by the Christian, Muslim and Jewish cultures.

For Nick Fuller, one of the highlights of Monday’s trip was to the see the Gothic Cathedral, which broke ground in 1227 and was not completed until 1493. It is a truly massive structure that is 390 feet long and 193 wide and full of ornate details (check out today’s photo gallery for some images).

“The cathedral was amazing and that was something that I don’t think any of the guys had ever seen before,” Fuller said.

The Huskers continued a walking tour of the city, including some time for lunch and shopping before finishing up in the Jewish Quarter of the city.

While most of the day was full of walking around the historic city, the day finished up with zip lining over the Tagus River. Coach Jim Molinari led a group of seven players, coaches and staff who experienced the thrill of zip lining in Spain.

“We were in for a treat at the end of the day when Coach Molinari volunteered to be the first one to zip line,” Fuller said. “It was a fun way to conclude the day as we had a good day bonding with our teammates in the city.”

The team finished Monday evening with a team meal, which also featured a birthday celebration for Husker athletic trainer R.J. Pietig. The team will have one last night in Madrid before leaving tomorrow morning for Albacete, where the team will play at 5 p.m. (10 a.m. central) before heading to Valencia after the game.
