Las Vegas, Nev. – Former Husker wrestlers Jordan Burroughs (74 kg/163 lbs.) and James Green (70 kg/154 lbs.) each took home men’s freestyle medals in the 2015 World Championships at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nev., on Saturday.
Burroughs captured his fourth world title (2012 Olympics; 2011, 2013, 2015 World Championships), while Green took home a bronze medal in his first World Championships appearance.
Burroughs won three technical falls over a span of six matches, including the gold-medal match, where he defeated Mongolia’s Unurbat Purevjav, 12-4. In the semifinals, Burroughs managed a 4-3 victory over Russia’s Aniuar Geduev after taking down Alireza Mohammad Ghasemi of Iran, 5-0, in the quarterfinals.
Green won the first three of his five bouts in dominating fashion, outscoring his opponents 32-1. In the semifinals, he fell to Iran’s Hassan Aliazam Yazdanicharati, 9-4, but responded with an 8-0 fall over Bulgaria’s Miroslav Stefanov Kirov in the bronze-medal match.
ESPN2 will show tape-delayed coverage of freestyle on Sunday from 7:30 - 9:30 p.m. (CT). 2000 Olympic champion and former Husker Rulon Gardner will provide color commentary alongside play-by-play announcer Jason Knapp.
