With its postseason hopes still alive, the Nebraska soccer team (7-7-2, 3-5-2 Big Ten) makes it final regular-season appearance at home this season as the Huskers host Maryland on Wednesday at Hibner Stadium at 7:05 p.m. The game will be streamed on BTN Plus and live stats are available on Huskers.com.
Seniors Jaylyn Odermann and Katie Kraeutner will be honored with an on-field presentation before the game as part of Senior Night. In addition, there will be a fireworks show after the game and several giveaways throughout the game. Fans are welcome to come to the game in their Halloween costumes.
The Huskers are in 10th place in the Big Ten standings and need to finish in the top eight (after tiebreakers) to earn a spot in the tournament. A Nebraska win against Maryland paired with an Illinois loss (or tie) against Minnesota and a Michigan State win over Ohio State puts the Huskers in the Big Ten Tournament. All three games are set for Wednesday night.
Last Time Out: Huskers Storm Past Iowa in High-Scoring Game
Nebraska scored its most goals in a game this season to defeat Iowa, 5-3, at Iowa Soccer Complex on Friday, Oct. 23. Nebraska’s scoring effort was its most goals in a game since an 8-1 win over Northern Arizona on Sept. 4, 2011.
Sydney Miramontez earned four points in the game, as she assisted on each of NU’s first two goals and added a goal of her own in the 44th minute. Caroline Flynn and Haley Hanson each scored twice in the game.
Flynn struck first off a Miramontez assist in the second minute to give NU a 1-0 edge. Flynn scored her second goal in the 52nd minute off a Caroline Buelt assist, which gave the Huskers a 4-2 lead at the time.
Hanson tied the score 2-2 in the 29th minute off an assist from Miramontez. Hanson tallied the final goal of the game in the 55th minute off an assist by Michaela Loebel.
Nebraska edged the Hawkeyes in shots (18-9), shots on goal (10-6) and corner kicks (11-2). Goalkeeper Erika Johnson collected three saves in 90 minutes of action.
Scouting the Maryland Terrapins
Maryland is 6-11-1 this season and holds a 1-8-1 record in conference play. After winning five of their first eight games, the Terrapins have lost eight of their last 10 games. Alex Anthony leads the team in goals scored with 10 this season. Seven Terps each have one goal. Goalkeeper Rachelle Beanlands has started 17 games this season and has 75 saves, while allowing 17 goals.
Huskers Ranked 42nd in RPI
Nebraska is ranked 42nd in the RPI, released on Monday, Oct. 26. In addition, Nebraska is ranked No. 3 nationally in strength of schedule. These two rankings will play a role in Nebraska’s NCAA Tournament hopes.
New Stadium Drawing Large Crowds
In its eight home games at the new Hibner Stadium, Nebraska has hosted 11,344 fans for an average of 1,418 per game. The mark surpasses the season totals for each of the last 12 years, and ranks fifth in program history. The school record is 19,874 (1,529 average), set in 1999. NU has one home game remaining at its new facility in 2015. The Huskers have the 17th-highest accumulated attendance in the country.
Buelt Named Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week
Caroline Buelt received Big Ten Co-Freshman-of-the-Week honors on Tuesday, Oct. 20.
Buelt scored her first career goal against No. 24 Northwestern on Oct. 15. Her goal, which occurred in the 15th minute, proved to be the game winner in a 1-0 victory on the road. The Polk City, Iowa native took four shots, two of which were on goal, in 55 minutes of action against the Wildcats.
Erika Johnson Captures Pair of Weekly Honors
Sophomore goalkeeper Erika Johnson earned Big Ten Defensive Player-of-the-Week accolades as well as a spot on CollegeSoccer360.com’s Primetime Performers Honor Roll (Week 6) on Sept. 29.
The North Oaks, Minn., native allowed one goal and collected 13 saves in 200 minutes of action against Penn State and Ohio State. She posted her fourth shutout of the season in the 2-0 win over the Buckeyes on Sept. 27.
Jaycie Johnson Out for Season with Torn ACL
Junior forward Jaycie Johnson suffered a torn ACL against Penn State on Sept. 25 and will miss the remainder of the 2015 season.
Johnson scored three goals and added one assist in nine games this season. For her career, Johnson has 31 goals and six assists in 51 games. In 2014, she led the team with 11 goals and started all 19 games. In 2013, Johnson led the Huskers with 17 goals in 23 appearances and earned second-team All-Big Ten honors.
Walker, NU Soccer Approaching 300 Wins
Nebraska is three wins away from its 300th in program history, which would mark the same milestone for Head Coach John Walker. Walker became the first head coach in program history in 1994, and holds a record of 297-140-29 in his 22nd season.
Baldo Captures B1G Co-Freshman of the Week
Nebraska’s Lia Baldo earned Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week honors, announced by the conference on Sept. 8.
Baldo, who redshirted last season due to injury, captured her first Big Ten accolade after a solid showing against then-No. 20 DePaul on the road on Sept. 6. The Glenview, Ill., native helped the Huskers to a 3-1 victory over the Blue Demons, scoring the game-winning goal off of a corner kick from Sydney Miramontez in the 73rd minute. Baldo’s goal marked her second of the season, with her first coming against Central Michigan on Aug. 28.
Baldo shared the weekly award with Minnesota’s April Bockin.
Odermann Named to Primetime Weekly Honor Roll
Nebraska’s Jaylyn Odermann captured a spot on CollegeSoccer360.com’s (CS360) Primetime Performers Honor Roll for Division I, announced by the site for the week of Aug. 24.
Odermann claimed her place on the performance list after a stellar season debut victory versus then-No. 23 Kansas at home on Aug. 21. The Gretna, Neb., native tallied a single-game career-best five points against the Jayhawks, scoring two of Nebraska’s three goals and adding an assist in NU’s 3-0 win. The match marked Odermann’s first multiple-goal game of her career, becoming the first defender in program history to score multiple goals in a single game since Anna Caniglia produced three goals and an assist for seven points on Oct. 23, 2009 against Kansas.
Hibner Stadium: The Inaugural Season
After 10 years at the Nebraska Soccer Field, the Huskers have a new home at Hibner Stadium. Named after former Nebraska senior women’s administrator Barbara Hibner, the soccer complex features an all-grass, regulation size field, stadium lights, quality seating for 2,500 fans and a support facility with direct access to fan amenities.
