Husker Men Sign Trio

Lincoln, Neb. --- Nebraska men’s gymnastics coach Chuck Chmelka announced Monday the addition of three high-profile recruits. Evan Hymanson, Joshua Martin and Jacob Bonnay signeda National Letter-of-Intent to attend the University of Nebraska and join the Huskers beginning in the 2017 season. 

“I’m really excited about these three guys joining our team next season,” Chmelka said. “They’re tremendous athletes and great students. Evan Hymanson is a powerful and elegant gymnast who will compete for us in all events.  Joshua Martin is quick and powerful. He’s fantastic on floor and vault, but will help our team on all events as well. Jacob Bonnay is very developed on pommel horse, parallel bars and high bar, but he’ll compete in all-around for us too.”

Evan Hymanson, a native of Marlboro, N.J., competes for Monmouth Gymnastics Academy under the direction of head coach, Yuriy Aminov. His outstanding resume includes top finishes at the New Jersey State Championships.  In 2015, Hymanson placed first on vault, second on rings and third on floor and in the all-around. In 2014, he claimed the title on pommel horse, rings, parallel bars, high bar and the all-around. Hymanson also competed at the 2015 P&G Championships where he placed in the top 10 on floor and rings. Hymanson has been a regular competitor at the Junior Olympic National Championships since 2011. Most recently, in 2015, he placed ninth on floor.  Hymanson was also a star in the classroom, earning USA Gymnastics First-Team Academic All-America honors in 2013, 2014 and 2015. Additionally, Hymanson participated in National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and Math Honor Society.  At Nebraska, Hymanson will major in mechanical engineering.

“I chose Nebraska because it has the resources that will enable me to succeed both academically and athletically,” Hymanson said.  “There are opportunities for internships and networking that will help me in my future.  Nebraska has great school spirit and I look forward to being a contributing member of the talented and close-knit gymnastics team.”

Joshua (Josh) Martin, from Buffalo Grove, Ill., is a member of Aerial Gymnastics Club, under coach Tim O’Connell.  Martin has competed at the Junior Olympic National Championships for two consecutive years. Most recently, he placed third on floor and parallel bars in 2015. In 2014, Martin claimed second on vault. Martin will major in computer science at Nebraska and selected NU over Michigan, Illinois and Minnesota.

“I chose Nebraska because I loved the team and I loved the campus,” Martin said.

Jacob (Jake) Bonnay competes for Gymnastics Mississauga under head coach, Chris Foo.  The Burlington, Ontario native earned National Athlete of the Year in 2014 and 2015. Bonnay has been a member of the Canadian Junior National Team since 2014. In 2015, he took first place on pommel horse, high bar and parallel bars at the 2015 Junior National Championship.  Bonnay expects to make an impact for the team in the classroom as well. He has been named to the Honor Roll at Assumption Catholic Secondary School. At Nebraska, he intends to major in actuarial science. Bonnay chose Nebraska over Minnesota, Penn State and Illinois. 

“I was impressed with everything Nebraska had to offer including the coaches, the academics and the way they take care of their athletes,” Bonnay said.
