Jonesboro, Ark. – The second-ranked Nebraska bowling team finished seventh in the best-of-seven baker format championship tournament Sunday at the loaded Mid-Winter Invitational at Jonesboro Bowling Center in Jonesboro, Ark.
The 14-team tournament featured 10 ranked teams, including nine of the top 10 teams in the latest NTCA coaches poll.
The Cornhuskers (49-20) dropped their first two matches on the day but rebounded with a victory in the seventh-place match. Nebraska had been eliminated from championship contention following Saturday’s results.
No. 9 McKendree defeated No. 4 Sam Houston State in the championship match. No. 1 Arkansas State finished third, as the host Red Wolves defeated Vanderbilt in the third-place match.
The Huskers began the day with a loss to No. 7 Wisconsin-Whitewater, 4-3.5. The two teams split the first game and won three each, but the Warhawks advanced due to a tiebreaker.
NU fell to No. 8 Stephen F. Austin in the second match of the afternoon, 4-2. In the seventh-place match, Nebraska defeated No. 4 Central Missouri, 4-3.
In the individual standings, Briana Zabierek led the Huskers with a 209.8 average, good for 10th overall. Julia Bond finished 17th with a 202.2 average, while Bethany Hedley and Gazmine Mason finished 19th and 20th, respectively, with averages of 199.4 and 199.
Nebraska will take a week off and return to action Jan. 29-31 at the Prairie View A&M Invitational in Arlington, Texas. The Huskers have won the tournament each of the last three years and have finished in the top four every year since 2012. The tournament is hosted by No. 21 Prairie View A&M.
