Kenosha, Wis. – The second-ranked Nebraska bowling team won its fourth tournament of the season, defeating fifth-ranked Central Missouri in the best-of-seven Baker format championship match Sunday at the Warhawk Invitational at Sheridan Lanes in Kenosha, Wis.
The Huskers (80-28) finished the weekend with a total pinfall of 13,940. The total is the second highest this season, as the Big Red scored a pinfall of 14,494 at the Big Red Invitational Nov. 12-14. The Huskers also scored a pinfall average 1,072.6 in traditional matches, eighth-most in school history.
The Warhawk Invitational featured 10 teams, with each ranked in the latest NTCA Top 25 Coaches poll. The Huskers went 11-2 over the three-day competition.
NU began the day as the top seed and defeated Central Missouri in the opening round, 4-2, advancing the Huskers to the championship match.
In the final, Central Missouri, which defeated McKendree in seven games to reach the championship match, was no match for the Big Red, as Nebraska swept the Jennies, 4-0. NU recorded four wins over Central Missouri on the weekend, improving their record to 11-1 against the Jennies this season.
Individually, Julia Bond finished second overall with an average of 229, her fourth top-five finish this season. Junior Briana Zabierek recorded her second top-five finish, placing third with a 225.2 average. Freshman Meghan Straub finished sixth overall with a 213.2 average, while Gazmine Mason finished 15th with an average of 205.6.
NU also defeated No. 12 St. Francis (Pa.) in a best-of-seven Baker match on Sunday by a score of 4-3.
The Huskers will take nearly a month off and return to action for their final regular season tournament before the NCAA Championships March 18-20 at the Columbia 300 Music City Classic in Smyrna, Tenn. The tournament is hosted by Vanderbilt, which is ranked No. 3 in the nation. The Huskers have competed at the Music City Classic in each of the last seven years, winning three times while finishing no lower than fifth. NU also won the tournament in 2007. Mason won MVP honors at last season’s Music City Classic, finishing with a 230 average.
