Burroughs Clinches Spot on Olympic Team

Iowa City, Iowa – Jordan Burroughs (Freestyle - 74 kg) won both of his matches in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Sunday to advance to the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil this summer.

Burroughs entered the day having already clinched a spot in the best-of-three finals, where he faced Challenge bracket winner Andrew Howe. In the first match, Burroughs won by a 9-3 decision against Howe. In the second match, Burroughs made quick work of Howe with a 10-0 technical fall in 1:26.

Burroughs is a four-time Olympic/World champion, capturing the Olympic gold medal in 2012, while taking gold at the World Championships in 2011, 2013 and 2015. He won two national titles at Nebraska (2009, 2011).

Former Husker James Green (Freestyle - 65 kg) and Volunteer Assistant Matt Meuleners (Freestyle – 125 kg) competed in the Olympic Team Trials on Saturday, but each went 0-2. Green fell to Zain Retherford, 9-2, and Bernard Futrell, 8-4. Meuleners lost to Anthony Nelson, 6-3, and Connor Medbery, 7-6.
