The Nebraska softball program added to its nation-leading total of academic All-Americans on Thursday, when senior first baseman Mattie Fowler was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team.
Fowler is the first Nebraska softball player to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades since 2011 and is the first Husker to be a first-team academic All-American since 2009. Fowler’s selection increased Nebraska’s nation-leading total to 30 CoSIDA Softball Academic All-Americans, five more than Southern Illinois (25). Fowler is the 14th Husker to be recognized as an academic All-American under Head Coach Rhonda Revelle.
A two-time, first-team academic all-district honoree, Fowler’s first academic All-America honor capped a decorated senior season for the Tucson, Ariz., native. In the classroom, Fowler was named Nebraska’s 2015-16 Female Student Athlete of the Year, in addition to being a Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient and the first four-time academic all-conference selection in program history. Fowler also excelled on the field, where she was a second-team All-Midwest region honoree and a second-team All-Big Ten selection while also earning spots on the Big Ten All-Defensive Team and the Big Ten All-Tournament Team.
Fowler made the CoSIDA Academic All-America team as a graduate student, after she earned her degree in finance in May 2015. Fowler posted a 4.0 grade-point average in her first year as an MBA student in 2015-16 after carrying a 3.80 cumulative GPA as an undergrad. On the field, Fowler batted .347 with six doubles, three homers and 44 RBIs this season. Nebraska’s 2016 Most Valuable Player, Fowler set career highs in nearly every offensive category, ranking second on the team in RBIs and third in batting average. Defensively, Fowler posted only the second perfect fielding season in Husker history, as she was error-free in 435 chances at first base.
