Colgate Finishes Runner-up at Nebraska Match Play

Lincoln, Neb. – Michael Colgate took second place at the 49th Nebraska Match Play Championship at Firethorn Golf Club on Friday, falling to Rylee Reinertson, 6 and 5, in the 36-hole final.

Colgate, a Sarasota, Fla., native, automatically qualified for the Round of 32 with his win at last year’s Nebraska Match Play Championship at The Prairie Club in Valentine. He opened Wednesday’s action with a win over former Husker Jordan Reinertson in 19 holes.

In the Round of 16, also on Wednesday, Colgate took down Ben Maskus, 5 and 3. On Thursday, Colgate defeated Travis Minzel, 3 and 2, before notching a 6 and 5 victory over former Husker Mike Coatman in the semifinals.

In the 36-hole final, Colgate managed to win five holes against Reinertson, but the rising junior at Oklahoma parred the 31st hole to defeat Colgate.

Colgate, a rising senior for the Huskers, led the team in stroke average last season at 74.29 in 31 rounds.
