Bond, Mason Earn Silver in Doubles at Worlds

Lincoln - Nebraska bowlers Julia Bond and Gazmine Mason earned a silver medal in the doubles competition Friday evening at the World Bowling Youth Championships at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln.

Bond and Mason, bowling for USA 1, fell to Korea 1 in the final by a score of 514-342. Mason, a rising senior for the Huskers in 2016-17, led the way for the Americans with a score of 184.

In the qualifying rounds, USA 1 finished second in Squad A and third overall, posting a total pinfall of 2,459. Mason led the way with scores over 200 in each of the six games, including a high game of 257 in the final qualifier.

In an all-USA semifinal match, Bond and Mason downed USA 2, consisting of Arkansas State's Jordan Richard and 2016 NTCA Player of the Year Stephanie Schwartz of Stephen F. Austin, by a score of 404-335. Bond, who will be a junior for the Big Red in 2016-17, led the way with a 208 for USA 1.

Raquel Orozco, an incoming freshman to the Nebraska program in 2016-17, bowled on Mexico 1 which finished 22nd overall. Orozco posted a high game of 200 in the fourth qualifying game.

Mason and Bond will team up with Richard and Schwartz in the team of four competition, which begins Saturday morning at 9 a.m. (CT). Orozco will also bowl with Mexico in the team of four competition. Team of four semifinals will take place on Sunday at 9 a.m., with the final to follow at 10:15 a.m. The World Bowling Youth Championships run until August 2 at Sun Valley Lanes.
