Bond, Mason Earn Silver in Team Competition

Lincoln - Nebraska bowlers Julia Bond and Gazmine Mason earned silver medals for Junior Team USA in the team of four competition at the World Bowling Youth Championships Monday morning at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln.

The Americans fell in the best-of-three final to Korea, 2-0. Arkansas State's Jordan Richard and 2016 NTCA Player of the Year Stephanie Schwartz of Stephen F. Austin also competed with Bond and Mason on the USA squad.

USA earned the top seed after qualifying, with Mason, a rising senior for Nebraska in 2016-17, leading the way with an average of 236.33 through six qualifying games. Bond, who will be a junior for the Huskers this season, contributed a 210.17 average as all four USA bowlers posted averages above 200.

In the semifinal match, USA swept Sweden by a score of 2-0.

Mason adds a silver medal to the gold medal she earned in singles and the silver she earned with Bond in doubles. Bond also earned a bronze medal in singles in addition to silvers in doubles and the team competition.

Raquel Orozco, an incoming freshman to the Nebraska program in 2016-17, competed with her native Mexico in the team competition, posting a 216.5 average in helping Mexico to finish fifth in qualifying.

The masters competition at the World Bowling Youth Championships begins Monday afternoon, with the semifinal and final matches set for Tuesday morning at Sun Valley Lanes
