Burroughs Set to Defend Olympic Gold in Rio

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - Four-time Olympic/World champion and former Husker Jordan Burroughs (74 kg/163 pounds) looks to add to his legacy on Friday when he wrestles in the Men’s Freestyle Olympic competition in Rio.

Burroughs, a Sicklerville, N.J., native, captured his third World title in 2015 after winning gold in 2011 and 2013. He won the gold medal at the 2012 Olympics, and added a bronze medal at the 2014 World Championships.

Burroughs earned his spot on the U.S. Olympic Team after defeating Andrew Howe (9-3, 10-0) in the best-of-three team trials finals on April 10. Nebraska Head Coach Mark Manning is serving as a U.S. Freestyle Olympic Coach, and as a personal coach to Burroughs during the Rio Games.

Burroughs’ 2016 appearance in the Olympics marks the 11th time a former Husker wrestler has competed in the Games. NU’s Olympic wrestlers have collected six medals, including gold medals from Burroughs (2012) and Rulon Gardner (2000).

The prelims for 74 kg begin on Friday at 8 a.m. (CT) and will be streamed online by NBC Sports. Later in the morning, the Round of 16 (8:30 a.m.), Quarterfinals (9 a.m.) and Semifinals (9:40 a.m.) will take place. The Finals are scheduled for 2 to 3:30 p.m., and will be televised on CNBC.

Updated brackets and match-by-match results will be provided by United World Wrestling at unitedworldwrestling.com.

At Nebraska, Burroughs won two national titles (2009, 2011) and claimed the 2011 Hodge Trophy Award. He went 36-0 as a senior at 165 pounds after posting a perfect 35-0 record at 157 pounds in 2009. In 2009-10, his season was cut short by a torn PCL and LCL after racing to a 7-0 start.

The three-time All-American finished third at the 2008 NCAA Championships with a 34-6 record. He won a Big 12 title during the same season and added conference crowns in 2009 and 2011. Burroughs completed his college career with 128 wins, which currently ranks sixth in school history.
