Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - Jordan Burroughs (74 kg/163 pounds) went 1-2 in his second appearance in the Men’s Freestyle Wrestling Competition at the Olympic Games on Friday.
In the Round of 16, Burroughs took down Guinea-Bissau’s Augusto Midana, 8-3, but dropped back-to-back matches to be eliminated. In the quarterfinals, Burroughs lost to World No. 2 Aniuar Geduev of Russia, 3-2. The loss put Burroughs in the repechage, where he fell to Uzbekistan’s Bekzod Abdurakhmonov, 11-1.
Burroughs’ 2016 appearance in the Olympics marked the 11th time a former Husker wrestler had competed in the Games. NU’s Olympic wrestlers have collected six medals, including gold medals from Burroughs (2012) and Rulon Gardner (2000).
In addition to the 2012 Olympic gold medal, Burroughs owns three World titles (2011, 2013, 2015) and a World bronze medal (2014). Nebraska Head Coach Mark Manning served as a U.S. Freestyle Olympic Coach, and as a personal coach to Burroughs during the Rio Games.
At Nebraska, Burroughs won two national titles (2009, 2011) and claimed the 2011 Hodge Trophy Award. He went 36-0 as a senior at 165 pounds after posting a perfect 35-0 record at 157 pounds in 2009. In 2009-10, his season was cut short by a torn PCL and LCL after racing to a 7-0 start.
The three-time All-American finished third at the 2008 NCAA Championships with a 34-6 record. He won a Big 12 title during the same season and added conference crowns in 2009 and 2011. Burroughs completed his college career with 128 wins, which currently ranks sixth in school history.
