Lincoln, Neb. – On a night that was delayed by stormy weather, the Nebraska soccer team took an early 2-0 lead against Marquette and held on for the win in its season opener at Barbara Hibner Stadium on Friday night.
The win marked the 299th in program history, with Head Coach John Walker at the helm since the program’s inception in 1994.
True freshman Meg Brandt got the Huskers started early with a goal in the fifth minute off an assist from senior Jaycie Johnson. Brandt, an Ankeny, Iowa native, was one of three freshmen to start the game along with goalkeeper Aubrei Corder and Sinclaire Miramontez.
Corder, a Barboursville, W.Va., native, had two saves in 90 minutes of action, while allowing one goal. Marquette’s lone score was a Liz Bartels goal in the 32nd minute off an assist from Carrie Madden.
NU’s second goal came off a corner kick from Sydney Miramontez that bounced off a Marquette defender into the net. The score, which gave the Huskers a 2-0 advantage at the time, occurred in the 20th minute. Johnson, Courtney Claassen and Caroline Flynn also added shots for the Huskers.
The Huskers return to action on Monday night when they face BYU in Provo, Utah. The game is set for 6:30 p.m. (CT) and will be televised and streamed online by BYUtv.
