LINCOLN, Neb. - White defeated Red 4-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-23, 15-11) in the annual Nebraska volleyball preseason Red/White Scrimmage before 6,270 fans on Saturday night at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
The White team started with Mikaela Foecke, Kelly Hunter, Justine Wong-Orantes, Amber Rolfzen, Kadie Rolfzen, Andie Malloy, Kenzie Maloney and Briana Holman. The Red team started with Sydney Townsend, Brooke Smith, Hunter Atherton, Annika Albrecht, Tiani Reeves, Lauren Stivrins, Olivia Boender and former Husker Cecilia Hall, as well as practice player Jake Roberts.
Malloy led all players with 16 total kills and had 11 digs. She hit .667 for the White team with no errors on 18 attacks before switching to the Red team for the final two sets. Kadie Rolfzen had 13 kills and 10 digs. Hunter led all players with 44 assists. Holman had a match-high nine blocks and six kills, and Townsend led all players with 14 digs. The White team hit .336 and had 13 blocks, while Red tacked on seven blocks.
Prior to the match, the Huskers celebrated the 2015 National Championship with the official unveiling of the championship banner.
The Huskers begin the 2016 season on Friday, Aug. 26 vs. No. 10 Florida at the VERT Challenge in Eugene, Ore. First serve is set for 6 p.m. (CT). NU will also face No. 2 Texas in a rematch of last year's national championship match. The Huskers will face the Longhorns on Saturday, Aug. 27 at 6 p.m. (CT).
Set 1: White opened with a 25-16 win behind five kills from Malloy. Hunter dished out 11 assists, while Kadie Rolfzen had three kills and two blocks, and Holman had two kills and three blocks. For Red, the freshman Stivrins had three kills, and Atherton chipped in eight assists as the Red team's setter. White jumped out to a 9-1 lead, but Red regrouped and played the rest of the set nearly even.
Set 2: The second set was back-and-forth early on, though White pulled away midway through it to win 25-15. Malloy again paced White with seven more kills on 10 attacks, bringing her two-set total to 12 kills with no errors (.667 hitting). She also added seven digs in the set. Amber Rolfzen added four kills, and Holman posted a pair of blocks. Hunter added 14 more assists. For Red, Boender had two kills and three digs.
Set 3: For the third and fourth sets, Malloy and Boender switched teams. Red held a 23-22 lead, but White rallied with the final three points off the set to win 25-23. Boender tipped home the final point for her fourth kill in the set to go with five digs. Kadie Rolfzen added five kills. Albrecht and Reeves each had three kills for Red.
Set 4: The teams played a fourth set to 15 points, and White won 15-11. Kadie Rolfzen had four kills for the victorious White team, while Holman had three of her nine blocks.
