Orlando, Fla. – The top-ranked Nebraska bowling team sits in fourth place after two days of competition at the season-opening Wildcat Invitational at Boardwalk Bowl in Orlando, Fla. The Cornhuskers went 2-3 with a pinfall of 4,846 in five traditional matches on Saturday.
NU will face Stephen F. Austin in the opening round of the best-of-seven Baker format championship tournament on Sunday morning. The Huskers have a total pinfall of 9,674 through two days of competition.
Junior Julia Bond led the way for the Huskers individually, finishing fifth overall with an average of 220.2. Kelly Belzeski added a top-15 finish with an average of 192.6, good for 15th overall.
The Huskers dropped their opening match to No. 10 Fairleigh Dickinson by a score of 987-961, but quickly responded with a 976-985 victory over No. 22 Prairie View A&M.
In a rematch of the last two NCAA Championship matches, second-ranked Stephen F. Austin put up the highest score of the day in a 1,080-906 win over the Big Red.
The Huskers also dropped a match to No. 11 Maryland-Eastern Shore, 1,030-956.
NU saved its best performance of the day for last, rolling past Florida A&M by a score of 1,047-816 in the final match of the day.
No. 2 Arkansas State leads the tournament with a total pinfall of 10,213, followed by Sam Houston State with a pinfall of 9,861 and Stephen F. Austin with a pinfall of 9,746.
Nebraska’s match against Stephen F. Austin in the opening round of the best-of-seven Baker format championship tournament will begin at 8:30 a.m. (CT) on Sunday. The winner of the NU-SFA match will move on to face the loser of the Arkansas State-Sam Houston State match for a spot in the final.
