Two Bowlers Sign With Nebraska

Two talented bowlers have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Nebraska bowling program for the 2017-18 season, Head Coach Bill Straub announced Friday.

Michelle Guarro Sanchez (Guadalajara, Mexico) and Cassidy Ray (Herrin, Ill.) will join the Huskers next season, as each will look to add depth and compete for playing time in the years to come.

“We’re feeling very blessed to have both Michelle and Cassidy join our program,” Straub said. “Both of them are excellent student athletes. They exceed in the classroom and they both can help us sooner than later on the lanes and we’re very excited to have them both.”

Guarro Sanchez brings a wealth of international experience to the Huskers, as she has represented her native Mexico in international competitions since 2014. She is both a national and international medalist, competing three times on the international level. She attends Lincoln School in Guadalajara, Mexico, and she is coached by Carlos Gonzalo Olivera Chavez. She has bowled a high game of 280. Guarro Sanchez is the daughter of Francisco Jose Guarro Aveces and Maria Concepcion Olivia Sanchez Gonzalez. She will become the second student-athlete from Mexico to bowl for the Husker program, joining current freshman Raquel Orozco.

Ray is an experienced high school bowler and three-time Illinois High School Association State Tournament qualifier from Herrin High School in Herrin, Ill. She finished seventh overall at the IHSA State tournament in 2014 and helped her team to a 10th place finish in 2016. Ray finished 11th overall at the 2014 Illinois Pepsi USBC Youth Championships. Ray will become the seventh Husker bowler to hail from the state of Illinois, including current senior Briana Zabierek and junior Julia Bond.
