Lincoln, Neb. --- The White Team topped the Red Team 5-2, in Nebraska softball's Red-White Scrimmage on Friday afternoon.
Alyvia Simmons and MJ Knighten each scored two runs for the White Team, while Gina Metzler scored one. Freshmen Payton Huscroft and Olivia Ferrell each had two RBIs, while fellow classmate Ally Riley recorded one.
On the Red Team, Bri Cassidy, Bree Boruff and Laura Barrow each had a hit and Rylie Unzicker and Kaylan Jablonski each scored.
Regan Mergele started in the circle for the White Team. With all hitters starting with a 1-1 count, Mergele walked three of the first five batters in the top of the first. With the bases loaded and two outs, Austen Urness was up to bat and looked to put the red team on the board first. She made contact, but a fielder’s choice got the runner out at second, ending the inning.
In the bottom of the first, Jablonski started at pitcher for the red team. She walked lead-off hitter Alyvia Simmons and allowed Gina Metzler a base hit. After striking out Taylor Otte, Jablonski faced freshman Huscroft. Huscroft doubled to right field scoring Simmons and moving Metzler to third. Riley followed with a sac fly, scoring Metzler. Rindy Bryant flied out to left field to end the inning, The White Team added to their lead in the bottom of the second inning. Knighten hit a triple and Ferrell brought her across the plate.
The Red Team responded in the top of the third. With the bases loaded and two outs, Mergele walked Austen Urness, giving the Red Team one run, but got out of the inning after Lexey Kneib grounded out to second base.
In the bottom of the fourth, Knighten reached third base after being walked, stealing a base and reaching on an error. Ferrell scored Knighten, extending the White Team’s lead to 4-1. Both teams scored and additional run in the fifth inning.
The Nebraska pitchers were impressive in their first showing of the season. Caitlin Bartsch pitched one inning for each team and didn't allow an earned run. Regan Mergele pitched three hitless innings and Olivia Ferrell gave up one hit in her Husker debut.
Nebraska plays its first exhibition game of the fall on Sunday, when the Huskers face South Dakota at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at Bowlin Stadium. Admission is free into all fall games at Bowlin Stadium.
