Fairview Heights, Ill. – The No. 2-ranked Nebraska bowling team won the title at the Brunswick Bearcat Open after defeating No.1 McKendree in the championship final of the best-of-seven Baker format championship tournament Sunday in Fairview Heights, Ill. The team finished the weekend with a 11-2 record, with a total pinfall of 10,065.
The Cornhuskers began Sunday's tournament as the second seed, but fell to top-seeded McKendree in the first match of the championship tournament, 4-1. NU quickly rebounded, as the Big Red defeated No. 6 Stephen F. Austin in a roll off after tying 3.5-3.5, to move on to the championship match. In the final, NU avenged its earlier loss to the Bearcats, as the Huskers took down the hosts by a score of 4-3 to win the championship title.
Kelly Belzeski finished second in individual standings, posting an average of 218.8. Julia Bond finished fourth with an average of 215.6. The pair were both named to the All-tournament team.
The Huskers will return to the lanes next Friday through Sunday at Track Kat Klash in Houston, Texas.
