The top ranked Nebraska bowling team will compete for the title at the Stormin’ Ladyjack Invitational this Friday through Sunday. The tournament is hosted by No. 7 Stephen F. Austin at Copperfield Bowl in Houston, Texas.
The teams joining the Huskers in Houston include eight of the top 10 teams in the nation in No. 2 McKendree, No 3. Arkansas State, No. 4 Vanderbilt, No. 5 Sam Houston State, No. 7 Stephen F. Austin, No. 8 Maryland-Eastern Shore and No. 9 Tulane. The remaining teams include eight other top-25 teams in No. 11 Adelphi, No. 13 UAB, No. 16 LIU Brooklyn, No. 17 North Carolina A&T, No. 18 Duquesne, No. 19 Louisiana Tech, No. 20 Wisconsin Whitewater and No. 22 Maryville while Bethune-Cookman and St. Francis Brooklyn round out the list of teams competing.
The Huskers will start the tournament with matches against St. Francis Brooklyn and Duquesne, before facing Adelphi, LIU Brooklyn and Wisconsin-Whitewater to round out Friday’s competition.
The Huskers are coming off a tournament title at the Crusader Classic where the team went undefeated for a record of 12-0 and a total pinfall of 12,572. Three Huskers were named to the all-tournament team in Raquel Orozco, Kelly Belzeski and Julia Bond. Orozco was also named MVP of the tournament for her final average of 214.6
Competition begins Friday morning at 9:35 a.m. with five sets of five-game Baker matches, followed by five traditional matches on Saturday morning, beginning at 9:25 a.m. Combined results from Friday and Saturday will determine the seeding for Sunday’s bracket-play championship tournament, in which each team will play three rounds of best-of-seven Baker matches beginning at 8:30 a.m.
SFA Stormin’ Ladyjack Invitational Notes
This is the third year in a row that the Huskers will compete at the SFA Stormin’ Ladyjack Invitational. In the 2017 edition of the tournament, the Huskers finished in second place after falling to McKendree 4-1 in the championship match of Sunday’s Baker-format tournament. The Big Red finished the weekend with a 10 -3 record and an average of 205.1. Two Huskers, Julia Bond and Gazmine Mason were named to the all-tournament team with their averages of 228.0 and 219.0, respectively.
