Huskers Win SFA Stormin' Ladyjack Invitational

Houston, Texas- The top ranked Nebraska bowling team dominated the SFA Stormin’ Ladyjack Invitational over the weekend, going undefeated to win the tournament title. The Huskers defeated second-ranked McKendree in the championship final by a score of 4-2 on Sunday.

The Huskers finished with a total pinfall of 13,628 and a record of 13-0. NU has won each of its last 26 head-to-head matches, dating back to last week’s Crusader Classic.

In the first round of Sunday’s baker style tournament, the Huskers took down McKendree 4-2 for an automatic spot in the championship finals.

McKendree went on to play hosts Stephen F. Austin to decide who would play Nebraska in the championship finals. The Bearcats defeated SFA by a score of 4-2 for a rematch against the Huskers.

In the final, Nebraska rebounded from a first game loss to win four of the next five to take the title. The Huskers won each of the last three games (196-165, 194-189 and 212-163) on the way to victory.

“(Head Coach Bill) Straub couldn’t make it here this weekend due to the flu,” said Assistant Head Coach Paul Klempa. “But, we really wanted to keep the train on the track and play well for him and I think we did. The girls are excited, as they should be, and their performance is just a testament to their preparation leading up to this event.”

Two Huskers were named to the all-tournament team for their performances in Houston. Senior Kelly Belzeski recorded a total pinfall of 1,146, as she posted an outstanding average of 229.2. Fellow senior Julia Bond also earned a spot on the all-tournament team with her pinfall of 1,096 and average of 219.2.

Nebraska also defeated Bethune-Cookman, 4-0, in a best-of-seven Baker match Sunday, but that match did not affect the bracket-play tournament.

The Huskers will return to the lanes Feb 24-25 at the Mid-Missouri NCAA Invite in Fulton, Mo.
