The Nebraska beach volleyball team began its season with a 4-1 win on Friday evening at Benedictine University at Mesa in Arizona.
Three Husker pairs won in straight sets. Kelly Hunter and Annika Albrecht were 21-10, 21-13 winners as NU's No. 2 pair; Kenzie Maloney and Sami Slaughter won 21-16, 21-14 as the No. 3 pair, and Allie Havers and Jasmine Schmidt swept 21-10, 21-15 as the No. 4 pair. The Huskers' top pair, Lauren Stivrins and Jazz Sweet, won 21-19, 17-21, 15-13 against the Redhawks' top pair.
Maloney and Chesney McClellan also won an exhibition match in three sets, 21-17, 18-21, 15-10.
Nebraska (1-0) will play No. 6 LSU on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Grand Canyon University's Beach Volleyball Stadium in Phoenix, and the Big Red will cap the night against No. 11 Cal Poly in Tempe at 5 p.m. at the PERA Club.
