Cathedral City, Calif. - Despite a valiant effort, the Nebraska softball team (10-5) could not upset No. 1 Washington (16-0) Saturday night and fell to the Huskies, 4-2.
Taran Alvelo improved to 8-0 on the season, pitching a complete game and giving up just four hits and two runs. She also had five strikeouts.
Kaylan Jablonski dropped to 5-4 on the year. She pitched two innings, gave up three hits and four runs. Olivia Ferrell also pitched for the Huskers and got the start. Ferrell pitched four innings, gave up six hits, no runs and one strikeout.
Alyvia Simmons led the Husker offense with two hits. Jablonski and Madi Unzicker also had one hit for the Huskers - Jablonski hit a double and Unzicker had one home run.
The Huskies put pressure on right away. Washington got three singles in the top of the first to load the bases, but Nebraska's defense stepped up, getting out of the inning without giving up a run.
In the top of the third, Nebraska put two runners on base. Simmons hit a one-out single. She advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jablonski was walked to put runners on first and second with two outs, but a pop up ended the inning.
The Huskies scored first with a solo shot near the right line that just missed foul territory. Washington extended its lead in the fourth, scoring three runs. A leadoff walk and a double put two runners in scoring position with no outs. A good bunt scored one run, while the batter reached first. The runner at first then stole second and a single scored two more runs for Washington. The Huskers got out of the inning with a pair of fly balls and a strikeout.
Nebraska scored in the sixth after Jablonski hit a one-out double and Madi Unzicker smacked one to centerfield to cut the lead to 4-2.
The Huskers are back in action next weekend when they host Wichita State in their home opener on March 3. The Huskers and the Shockers will play a double header. The first game is set for 1 p.m. (CT) and the second game is set for 3 p.m. (CT).Both games will be available on Huskers.com (radio), courtesy of the Husker IMG Sports Network.
