The top-ranked Nebraska bowling team is set to host the annual Big Red Invitational this Friday through Saturday at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln. The Big Red Invitational marks the last tournament the Huskers will compete in before the NCAA Championship in April.
A total of ten teams will compete at Sun Valley Lanes, including each of the top three teams in the nation and six of the top-25 teams, as ranked in latest National Tenpin Coaches Association Top 25 Poll.
The nine teams making the trip to Lincoln include No. 2 McKendree, No. 3 Arkansas State, No. 15 Central Missouri and No. 20 Wisconsin-Whitewater. Also joining the Huskers on their home turf are No. 22 Maryville, No. 24 Lincoln Memorial, No. 25 Valparaiso, Prairie View A&M (RV) and Drury.
NU is heading into the weekend after a tournament victory at the Central Missouri Women’s Invitational where the team went undefeated to continue to a 36-game head-to-head winning streak. The Huskers dominated the individual standings, filling each of the top-five places. Raquel Orozco led the Huskers, winning the tournament with her average of 207.6. Allison Morris, Julia Bond, Meghan Straub and Kelly Belzeski completed the top-five finishers, respectively.
Friday’s action starts at 1:20 p.m., with four sets of five-game Baker matches, followed by five team games on Saturday starting at 8:25 a.m. and a two-round best-of-seven Baker format championship tournament on Sunday at 8:55 a.m. Promotional activities for Friday’s action include a free slice of pizza and a drink for the first 100 fans, a student drawing for aviator-style sunglasses and other prizes. Admission to the tournament is free all weekend.
Big Red Invitational Notes
This season will mark the eighth time in nine seasons that the Huskers have hosted the Big Red Invitational. The Huskers finished in second place last season after winning the tournament title the previous two years. Gazmine Mason took first in the individual standings, as she earned a spot on the all-tournament team. The Huskers fell to Arkansas State 4-3 in the championship match last season.
