Minneapolis, Minn. -Minnesota (26-14, 9-3 Big Ten) clinched the weekend series over Nebraska (30-16, 8-7 Big Ten) with a 6-0 win on Saturday, after also winning game one last night.
Alyvia Simmons led Nebraska on offense. She had the only extra-base hit of the day for Nebraska, when she hit a triple to start the game. It was her fourth this season, which is tied for 10th for most triples by a Husker in a single season. Laura Barrow, Taylor Otte, Lexey Kneib and Gina Metzler each had one hit for Nebraska. Madi Unzicker reached base twice, with a pair of walks.
Minnesota's Amber Fiser improved to 18-8 on the season. She pitched 5.1 innings and gave up just two hits. She also had three strikeouts.
Olivia Ferrell (8-5) pitched a complete six-inning game, which is tied for the second-longest outing of her career. She gave up six runs on eight hits and also had two strikeouts.
In the first, Simmons hit a leadoff triple but Minnesota retired the next three batters to leave her stranded. Minnesota drew a leadoff walk, but Nebraska got three outs without allowing another baserunner.
Nebraska went down in order in the second. Minnesota took put two runners on with a double and a walk. Nebraska got the lead runner out at third with a grounder to the pitcher. Another walk loaded the bases for the Gophers and a double scored two. A groundout scored another run to take a 3-0 lead.
Metzler delivered a perfect bunt and reached first to lead off the third. Another good bunt from Bri Cassidy moved Metzler to second. She reach third on a groundout, but another groundout ended Nebraska's hopes of scoring a run that inning. The Gophers hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the inning to extend the lead to 5-0. A single, a sac hit, a walk and a double scored another run. A walk loaded the bases, but a strikeout from Ferrell and a pop up ended the inning.
In the fourth, Madi Unzicker drew a two-out walk, but a ground out turned it over to the Minnesota offense. The Gophers drew a leadoff walk, but Nebraska got three straight outs to end the inning.
Sydney Smith started off the fifth in the circle for Minnesota. Lexey Kneib was hit by a pitch to reach first. Bree Boruff ran for Kneib and Metzler grounded out to move Boruff to second. A strikeout brought Simmons to the plate, who also drew a walk. Barrow singled to left field, but a close call at home got Boruff out as she attempted to score. In the bottom of the inning, a two-out walk and a single put runners on the corners for the Gophers, but a groundout ended the inning.
Madi Unzicker drew another two-out walk in the sixth and Otte singled through the left side. Kneib hit a hard shot to the pitcher to reach first and load the bases for Nebraska. Fiser re-entered the game for Minnesota and got a strikeout to halt the Huskers' momentum. Minnesota got one baserunner in the bottom of the inning with a bunt single.
In the top of the seventh, Nebraska was retired in order, ending the game.
